Materials

Limited Golden Beads

9 loose golden beads, each representing 1 unit

9 bars of ten, each bar made up of 10 unit beads

9 squares of hundred, each square made up of 10 bars of ten

1 cube of thousand, made up of 10 squares of hundred

Direct Aim

Sensorial experience of the categories and their names

Sensorial impression of the relationship between one category and the


next and their relative sizes

Presentation

1. Invite the child for the presentation

2. Introduce the child to the materials on the shelf

3. Let the child bring a medium size mat to the area of presentation

4. Show the child how to hold the tray and let the child bring the tray
to the area of presentation

5. Take out a unit and place it on the mat in front of the chid

6. Introduce the child to one unit by showing one single bead

7. Reiterate the words “one unit” while the child holds and takes in the
impression of a unit

8. Take out the bar of ten and place it to the left of the unit on the mat

9. Introduce the child to the bar of ten, let the child hold and take in
the impressions while you give the name “ten”

10. Verify and count along with the child 10 units in the bar by holding
one single unit (bead) across the bar from top to bottom
11. Draw the child’s attention that there are 10 units in the bar of ten

12. Take out the square of hundred, place it to the left of ten

13. Introduce the child to the square of hundred, let the child hold and
take in the impressions while you give the name “hundred”

14. Verify and count along with the child 10 bars in the square by holding
one single bar and placing it on each of the bar on the square, drawing
the child’s attention that there are 10 bars in the hundred

15. Take out the cube of thousand, place it next to hundred

16. Introduce the child to the cube of thousand, let the child hold and
take in the impressions of the cube while you give the name “thousand”

17. Take the square of hundred and count the hundred in thousand

18. Draw the child’s attention that there are 10 hundreds in a thousand

19. Continue giving the child a formal three period lesson for a unit, ten,
hundred and thousand

20. In the second period, emphasis is on the feeling of the quantities.

21. Bring back all the quantities in order

22. Ask the child to identify the quantities

23. Draw the child’s attention to the remaining quantities in the tray. Tell
him that we will work with them at a later date.

24. Show the child how to put the quantities back in the tray and put the
materials back to the shelf

Exercise 1 Ask for Quantity

1. Invite the child for the exercise

2. Let the child lay a medium size mat in the area of presentation

3. Ask the child to bring the materials from the shelf to the mat

4. Place the tray to the bottom right corner of the mat

5. Take out the units one at a time from the tray and count along with
the child. Place the units on the top right corner of the mat, grouping them
together as a unit category
6. Take out the tens one at a time from the tray and count along with
the child. Place the tens to the left of the units, grouping them together as
a ten’s category

7. Take out the hundreds one at a time from the tray and count along
with the child. Place the hundreds to the left of the tens, grouping them
together as a hundred’s category

8. Take out the cube of thousand from the tray and count along with
the child. Place the cube of thousand to the left of the hundreds, grouping
it as a thousand’s thousand

9. Introduce the child to the empty tray and bowl on the shelf

10. Ask the child to bring a tray and small bowl from the shelf to the mat

11. Sit at a distance from the mat, along with the child

12. Tell the child that you will tell a category and quantity, and the child
will have to bring that many quantity of that particular category from the
mat to you in the tray, example bring me five units

13. Once the child brings, count and verify along with child

14. Ask to put the same back

15. Now ask the child to bring another quantity from another category

16. Continue in the same manner for as long as the child is interested

17. Note- we ask the child to bring the qty from only one category (units,
tens, hundreds, thousands)

Exercise 2 Identify Quantity

1. Invite the child for the exercise

2. Let the child lay a medium size mat in the area of presentation

3. Ask the child to bring the materials from the shelf to the mat

4. Ask the child to lay out and arrange the materials as in the exercise
1

5. Isolate the material from any one category, in certain quantity of


your choice

6. Place it on the tray

7. Ask the child to Identify the quantity


8. Once the child has identified, along with the child count and verify
the same

9. Continue in the same manner for as long as the child is interested
