Background

An RFID (Radio-frequency Identification) based electronic shopping trolley is a smart cart that uses RFID
technology to scan RFID tags in shopping items. RFID tags are essentially tags that are used for unique
identification of products using radio waves. The scanned tags contains information about the items
such as name, price, size, weight and manufacturer stored in the database. These information will then
be sent back to the RFID reader and be used to generate a bill. The bill will be forwarded to the central
billing system (CBS) where the customer will pay. This can be achieved with a shopping trolley installed
with RFID reader to scan each product and load the information using a microcontroller. The simple
RFID system consisting of a transponder, receiver and a transmitter has opened a door for renovations
in various sectors. As with inventory management in the business sector, Determination of the amount
and type of goods to purchase at a particular time is now much easier. This is a huge benefit to the sales
department and the management board because effective decisions on purchases are made. This is not
enough though as business industry especially sales department still faces many challenges which not
only affect the business but also the customers. With the existing purchasing procedure, theft of goods
and a significant customer service workforce affect the business. On the other hand, over purchasing
and queuing for long time are some of the challenges faced by customers. An RFID system can be
implemented on shopping carts to cut down the steps a customer needs to follow when shopping. This
will entail a cart that essentially perform the activities of an attendant utilizing the existing barcode
inventory system. Moreover, a bill of the purchased products will just be generated in the shopping cart.
The RFID Based Electronic Shopping Trolley is a smart shopping cart that uses an RFID reader device to
scan RFID tags attached or embedded in shopping items.

Problem Statement
Although RFID systems have been employed to solve problems in the retail sector, there are still
predicaments that need to be addressed. The existing barcode system used in most retail businesses not
only slows down the purchasing process but also leads to wastage of resources. It slows down the
purchasing process because an attendant has to manually read the barcode on shopping items one by
one. It leads to wastage of resources due to many salaried customer service clients that must be
employed. The replacement of this barcode system with the proposed RFID system based shopping
trolley will solve these problems now that scanning the tags on products to generating a bill will be
performed in the shopping cart. Moreover, the shopping experience of customers will no longer be a
tedious experience because of long queues for customer services.

Objectives

• To solve the problems experienced in the existing barcode system such as time and resource
wastage
• To replace the existing barcode system with a more advanced way of purchasing

Specific Objectives

• To eliminate overspending by customers while shopping by designing a smart RFID based

electronic trolley that will automatically scan tags on products while displaying their value

• To minimize time spent in the shopping mall by setting up an RFID based trolley that will
automatically scan tags on products to be purchased

• Reduce the number of customer service desks and therefore increase business profitability by
automating customer shopping through an RFID electronic shopping trolley.

• Ensure faster, simpler and enjoyable shopping experience for customers through
implementation of a smart RFID based shopping cart.

Relevance to Telecommunications
This research project will have an appreciable relevance in the world of Telecommunications as it
exemplifies the many possible applications of Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This will
not only stimulate future RFID based devices and equipment inventions but also it will be a reference to
future telecommunication researchers who would like to conduct studies in the same field.
