sequence.
Let us derive another formula.
Substitute in the formula. Thus, in finding the sum of the first n terms
of an arithmetic sequence you may use
either of the two formulas

n = number of
a1 = first term terms
d = common
an = last term
difference
Example 2. What is the sum of the first 12 terms of the arithmetic
sequence 7, 16, 25…?
Since the last term is not given, use the second formula.
S12 = 6[ 14 + (11) 9 ]
S12 = 678
Example 3. What is the sum of all multiples of 3 from 24 to 273?

GENERALIZATION
• An arithmetic series is the indicated sum of the
terms of an arithmetic sequence.
• The formula in finding the sum of the first n terms
of an arithmetic sequence:
- if the last term is given is
