Study the discourse extract 1 and use it to answer questions 1(a) and 1 (b)

e) Discuss three ways through which a speaker indicates a possible completion point
(PCP) (6 marks)
2. a) According to Austin J.L (1962), Whenever one produces an utterance one
performs three acts simultaneously. Discuss these three acts. (10 marks)
b) Searle (1969) divides speech acts into five basic categories. Discuss with
examples these five basic categories (10 marks)
3. a) The co-operative principle has four sub- maxims that people involved in a
conversation must accept. Discuss these Maxims (8 marks)
b) Explain the difference between quietly violating a Maxim and openly flouting a
Maxim (6 marks)
c) Discuss three grammatical categories of mood according to Searle (6 marks)
4. a) Describe the three key conversational phases (6 marks)
b) According to Austin J.K (1962) “How to do things with words)” Austin argues
that utterances can be placed into two categories. Discuss these two categories.
(8 marks)
c) List down at least four felicity conditions for the act of ordering (6 marks)
5. Study the discourse extract 2 and use it answer question 5(a)
