1.) What are Layers in GIMP? Explain its advantages.
Ans :- In the GIMP, Layers are the sheets which are transparent. This Layers are
mostly used in creating images in GIMP. With the help of layers, we can work separately
work with the different parts of the image without disturbing the other parts of the image.
The advantages of using the Layers in the GIMP are as follows :-
Advantages of layers in GIMP
 Layers helps in controlling and flexibles the image for us to work on.
 We can easily work on different parts of the image without disturbing the other
image parts.
 If incase, while creating images in GIMP, we make any mistake or something
goes wrong, then we can easily delete that particular layer and create the new
one.

2.) Write down the steps for adding a layer?


Ans :- The steps for adding a layer in GIMP are as follows :-
 When the layer window opens up. Just make a click on create a new layer button
which is at the bottom of the Layer window.
OR
 Select Layer ———- New Layer
 After which the New layer dialog box gets opened up.
 Now it’s the time for typing the name for the layer and select the Layout Fill Type
that is you want the layer to be filled with the background color, foreground
color, white color or want to leave it as transparent.
 Click on the Ok button.
 In the Layers window, you may find that new layer will be inserted.
 If incase we want to work on any layer, then simply we have to click on that
particular layer name in the Layer window.\

3.) How do we delete a layer and make a duplicate layer in GIMP.


Ans :- The steps for deleting a layer
 In the layer window, select the layer which you want to delete.
 At the bottom of the Layer window, there is a button named as Delete layer
button. Click on it.
The steps for creating a duplicating layer
 In the layer window, select the layer of which you want to make a duplicate.
 At the bottom of the Layer window, there is a button named as Create a duplicate
layer button. Click on it.

4.) What do know about the Base Layer?


Ans :-In GIMP, the image is always opened on the layer known as the Base
Layer. Base Layer is also known as the Bottom Layer. To avoid the disturbance or
effectness to our original image, it is much necessary for us to create a duplicate layer in
GIMP.

5.) What do you mean by Masking? Write down the steps to use this effects :-
Ans :- In GIMP, if we want to hide any part of the image, masking effect is been used. It
helps in modifying the transparency of the layer in which the image is placed. The steps
for using the Masking effect is as followed :-
 Open the image.
 In the layer window, select the layer for creating a duplicate layer
OR
Layer ————- Duplicate Layer from the menu or click on the Duplicate layer button of
the Layer window bottom.

 In the layer window, select the duplicate layer of the image.


 Select Color ——- Desaturate

 The Desaturate dialog box appears. Click on OK button which will help to convert
the image (in the duplicate layer) into the black and white.

 From the Select menu right click on the duplicate layer and select Add layer Mask
option.
 The Add Layer Mask dialog box appears. Select White (full opacity) and click on
Add.
 Select the Paint Brush tool. Click and Drag the area that you want to show from
the layer below.

6.) What are Filters in GIMP? How do we make use of filters in GIMP?
Ans :- Filters are the ready-made special effects which can be applied to the image in
regards to the change in the appearance of a image. With the help of Filters in GIMP, we
can apply the photographic or artistic effects to an image. The steps to apply the filters
to an image are as follows :-
 Open the image

 From the Filter menu select the desired filter, Distort —- Emboss from the sub-
menu. A dialog box will appear. Now enter the values and click on OK.
 You may also notice that the selected filter is been applied to the image.
