NUMERICAL: CAPACITORS AND CAPACITANCE

1. Assuming the earth to be a spherical conductor of radius 6400 km,

calculate its capacitance. (Answer 711 µF)
2. Two capacitors of capacitance of 6 µF and 12 µF are connected in
series with a battery. The voltage across the 6 µF capacitor is 2V.
Compute the total battery voltage. (Answer: 3V)
3. Two capacitors of capacitance 3 µF and 6 µF are charged to
potential is of 2V and 5V respectively. These two charge capacitors
are connected inparallel. Find the charge across each of the two
capacitors now.(Answer :12 µC across 3 µF and 24 µC across 6 µF)
4. Three capacitors of equal capacitance when connected in series
have a net capacitance C1, and when connected in parallel have net
capacitance C2. What is the value of C1/C2? (Answer : 1/9)
5. If C1 = 3pF and C2 =2pF, calculate the equivalent capacitance of the
given network between poi nts A and B. (Answer: 60/61pF)

6. From the network shown in the figure find the value of the
capacitance C if the equivalent capacitance between point A and B
is to be 1 µF. All the cap acitors are in µF . (Answer 32/23 µF)

7. Four capacitors are connected as shown in the figure. Calculate the

equivalent capacitance between points P and Q. (Answer 5 µF)
8. Obtain the equivalent capacitance of the network in the given
figure for a 300 V supply. Determine the charge and voltage across
each capacitor. (Answer:200/3 pF, 200 V, 50V , 50 V)

9. (a) A 900pF capacitor is charged by 100 V battery. How much

electrostatic energy is stored by the capacitor? (b) The capacitor is
disconnected from the battery and connected in parallel to another
900 pF capacitor. What is the energy stored in the system?
(Answer: U= 4.5×10-6 J, U’= 2.25×10-6 J)
10. The plates of a parallel plate capacitor have an area of 90 cm²
each and are separated by 2.5 mm. The capacitor is charged to
400V. How much electrostatic energy is stored in it? How much,
when it is filled with the dielectric medium of K equal to 3 and then
charged. If it is first charged as an air capacitor and then filled with
the dielectric, the how much would be its electrostatic energy?
(Answer:Uo = 2.55x10-6 J, U=7.65 x10-6 J, U’= 0.85x10-6 J)
11. A 10 µF capacitor is charged by a 30 V DC supply and then
connected across an uncharged 50 µF capacitor. Calculate(a) the
final potential difference across the combination and (b) the initial
and final energies. How will you account for the difference in
energy? (Answer: V’= 5 V , U= 4.5x10-3 J, U’ = 0.75x10-3 J. The energy
decreases after connections. This energy appears as heat in
connecting wires and is radiated in the form of electromagnetic
radiation)
12. Three capacitors 3 µF,6 µF and 10 µF are connected to a 50 V
battery as shown in the figure. Calculate (a)equivalent capacitance
of the circuit between A and B and (b) the charge on C1. (Answer:
C=12 µF , Charge on C1= 200 µ C)

13. You are provided with 8 µF capacitors. Show with the help of
a diagram how you will arrange minimum number of them to get a
resultant capacitance of 20 µF.
14. In the network of capacitor is given in the adjacent figure, find
the effective capacitance between the points P and Q. Given C1
equals C2 equals C3 equals C4 equals 4 µF and C5 equals 5 µF. If a
10 V battery be connected across P and Q what will be the charges
on the capacitor? (Answer: charge on C1,C2,C3 and C4 will be 20 µC
the charge on C5 is zero)

15. Find the equivalent capacitance of the adjoining circuit

between the junction A and B; given C1=C2=C3=C4 = 10 µF and
C5=5 µF. (Answer C equals 10 µF, bridge is in balance condition
hence C5 remains ineffective)
16. Three capacitor C1= 6 µF ,C2= 12 µF and C3=20 µF are
connected to 100 V battery as shown in the figure. Calculate (a)
charge on each plate of capacitor C1,C2 and C3, (b) Electrostatic
potential energy stored in capacitor C3. (Answer: charge on C1 and
C2 is 400 µF, charge on C3 is 20 00 µF, U = 0.1 J)

C3=2.5 µF. Calculate (a)total capacitance, charge and energy of the
system, (b) charges on separate capacitors (c) PD’s across separate
capacitors. (Answer :4 µF,800 µC, 0.08 J, charge on C1 =charge on
C2 =300 µC, charge on C3=500 µC, potential difference C1=150 V,
across C2 =50 V and a cross C3=200V)

18. Two capacitors of capacitance C1=3 µF and C2=6 µF are

arranged in series and then are connected in parallel with the third
