1. If there is a block of mass 2kg, and a force of 20 N is acting on it in the positive x-direction,
and a force of 30 N in the negative x-direction, then what would be its acceleration?
2. A poacher fires a bullet of mass 10 g with a velocity 800 m/s. After passing through the
body of a buffal0 80 cm thick, its velocity is reduced to 100 m/s. Calculate the average
resistive force offered by the body of the buffalo.
3. A bullet of mass 10 g travelling at the speed of 100 m/s penetrates a baobab tree and is
brought to rest in 0.1 s. Find the average retarding force of the sand and the depth of
penetration.
4. A student pushes a loaded trunk whose mass is 260 kg for a distance of 2.3 m over a
frictionless surface. He exerts a constant horizontal force of 130 N as he does so. If the
trunk starts from rest, how long does he take to do so?
5. On planet X, an object weighs 10 N. On planet Y, where the acceleration due to gravity is
16 m/s2, the object weighs 27 N. What is the mass of object and the value of the
acceleration due to gravity on planet X?
6. An 80 kg man stands on the floor of an elevator cab. What is the weight of the man if the
elevator is
(a) moving up with constant speed?
(b) moving up with constant acceleration of 2.5 m/s2?
(c) moving down with constant acceleration of 2.5 m/s2?
7. Two objects of masses m1 = 5 kg and m2 = 3 kg, are connected by means of a light
inextensible string passing over a frictionless pulley of negligible mass as shown in the
figure below. The mass m1 is released from rest when it is 4 m above the floor.
(a) Calculate the acceleration of the masses.
(b) Calculate the speed of each object at an instant m1 hits the floor
(c) How much higher does m2 travel after m1 hits the floor?
8. Two blocks of masses m1 = 4 kg and m2 = 6 kg are connected by a massless string that
passes over a massless frictionless pulley as shown in the figure below. Initially, block m1
lies on the frictionless horizontal plane while block m2 is at a height h = 0.75 m above the
ground. The system is released from rest. Find the acceleration of the masses, the tension
in the string and the speed of the masses just before m2 hits the ground. Take g = 10 m/s2.
9. A constant force of 100 N is applied to a 10 kg box at an angle of 30° above the horizontal
as shown in the figure below. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the
surface is 0.15. If the box starts from rest, how far will it have travelled after 5 seconds?
10. Two blocks of masses m1 = 4 kg and m2 = 6 kg are connected by a massless string that
passes over a massless frictionless pulley as shown in the figure below. Initially, block m1
lies on a rough horizontal plane while block m2 is at a height h = 0.75 m above the ground.
The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is 0.2. The system is
released from rest. Find the acceleration of the masses, the tension in the string and the
speed of the masses just before m2 hits the ground. Take g = 10 m/s2
11. A block of mass 𝑚 = 2 kg is placed on an inclined plane of angle 𝜃 = 30°, as shown in the
figure below. The block is released from rest at the top of the plane, where the distance
from the bottom is 𝑑 = 10 m. Take g = 10 m/s2. Calculate the speed of the block when it
reaches the bottom of the incline if
(a) the incline is smooth.
(b) is rough and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the box and the surface is 0.3.
13. A body of mass 400 kg on a 30 degrees inclined plane is acted upon by a force of 4800 N
at an angle of 30 degrees with the incline as shown in the figure below. Find the
acceleration of the body if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the surface and the
body is 0.2.
14. A bag of cement of mass 50 kg hangs from three wires as suggested in the figure below.
Two of the wires make angles 𝜃1 = 60° and 𝜃2 = 30° with the horizontal. If the system
is in equilibrium, find the tensions 𝑇1 , 𝑇2 and 𝑇3 in the wires. Take g = 10 m/s2
15. A 20 kg child and a 30 kg child sit at the opposite ends of a 4 m seesaw of mass 10 kg that
is pivoted at its center.
(a) Where should another child of mass 20 kg sit in order to balance the seesaw?
(b) Determine the magnitude of the upward force exerted by the pivot.
16. A uniform half meter rule is freely pivoted at 15 cm mark and it balances horizontally when
a body of mass 50 g is hung from the 4 cm mark?

17. A block of weight W = 200 N is supported by a uniform beam of weight 140 N as shown in
the Figure below. If L1 = 1.1 m and L2 = 1.4 m, find the tension in the wire and the vertical
and horizontal components of the force exerted by the hinge on the beam.
18. A 6 m uniform ladder of mass 20 kg rests against a smooth wall and on a rough horizontal
floor, at an angle 53° above the horizontal. The coefficient of static friction between the
ladder and the floor is 0.55. An electrician of mass 60 kg slowly climbs the ladder to fix a
light bulb. What is the maximum distance he can climb, measured up the ladder from its
base before the ladder will fall? Take g = 10 m/s2
