Subject: Direct Stiffness & Energy Method

1. Obtain the nodal displacements in the spring system shown in Fig 1. Consider spring
constant equal to 20N/mm and apply 1000N load at node 3.

Fig 1
2. Using direct stiffness matrix method, obtain nodal displacements, the forces in each element, and
the reactions for the spring assembly shown in the Fig. 2 below.

Fig. 2
3. Find out the nodal displacements and internal forces in the bar system shown in Fig. 3. A=1
in2 and E=30E6psi.

Fig. 3

4. Solve for the axial displacement and stress in the tapered bar shown in Fig. 4. Using one and then
two constant-area elements. Evaluate the area at the center of each element length. Use that area
for each element. Let A0= 2 in2, L = 20 in., E = 10x 10 6 psi, and P = 1000 lb. Compare your finite
element solutions with the exact solution.

5. Fig. 5 depicts an assembly of two bar elements made of different materials. Determine the nodal
displacements, element stresses, and the reaction force

Fig. 5

6. The cantilever truss in Fig. 6 was constructed by a builder to support a winch and cable system (not
shown) to lift and lower construction materials. The truss members are nominal 2 × 4 southern
yellow pine (actual dimensions 1.75 in. × 3.5 in.; E = 2 × 106 psi). Using the direct stiffness method,
calculate
a. The global displacement components of all unconstrained nodes.
b. Axial stress in each member.
c. Reaction forces at constrained nodes.
d. Check the equilibrium conditions

Fig. 6
Fig. 7

7. For the space trusses shown in Fig.7, determine the nodal displacements and the stresses in each
element. Let E= 210 GPa and A= 10 x10 -4 m2 for all elements. Verify force equilibrium at node 1. The
coordinates of each node, in meters, are shown in the figure. All supports are ball-and-socket joints.

8. A 3D truss is shown in Fig. 8 below. E=8275N/mm2. Nodes 2, 3 and 4 are supported by ball
and socket joint and thus constrained of movement in all directions. Node 1 is constrained
in y direction by a roller. Find the stresses in three elements. The nodal coordinates in mm
are node 1 (1829,0, 0), node 2 (0,914,0), node 3(0,914,1829) and node 4 (0,0, -1219).
A1=194.8 mm2, A2=470.3mm2 and A3=120.6 mm2.

Fig. 8 Fig. 9
9. Find nodal displacements, internal forces and draw bending moment diagram for the frame
shown in Fig. 9. E=30E6 psi, A=10in2, Ibeam=100in4 and Icolumn=200in4.

Topic: Shape Functions

1. Prepare a 20X20 square matrix, change it into banded matrix, solve it by CG method and explain
how CG method iterates
2. Generate member stiffness matrix and rotation matrix considering torsion in 3D
3. Derive shape function for a bar element in  system varying from -1 to 1. Nodes are at
an interval ¼ of length.
4. For a rectangular element, the displacement field is based on bi-cubic Lagrangian
interpolation. Write down the shape functions corresponding to nodes located at
x/a = -1, y/b = 1
x/a = -1, y/b = 1/3
x/a = -1, y/b = -1/3
x/a = -1/3, y/b = -1/3
x/a = -1, y/b = -1
Sketch the shape functions. The element side length are 2a and 2b along x and y
respectively.

5. Draw shape function for problem 4 excluding internal nodes.

6. Derive shape functions and sketch them for an equilateral triangle consisting 15 nodes
along the sides. Assume nodes along all sides of the triangle divide the edges into equal
divisions.

• Plot all shape functions

• Use Matlab or GNU-Plot
