Section 1 : Tools and CommandManager


This section will present the various interface elements (tools and commands) available for the
general use of SolidWorks, and will show how the SolidWorks interface can be customized.

To start, select a new file, and select “Part”

Accept your selection by clicking “OK”.


The major elements of the SolidWorks interface are the graphics window, where all the actions
takes place, the FeatureManager, which is the list of all features in the part you are drawing, the
PropertyManager, for function input, and the CommandManager and Toolbars, thorough which
you can access most of the commands available in the software.
In figure 1.2 shows the default interface.

1.1 ComandManager
You can use this area of the interface to flip between sets of related commands, such as do a
sketch, extrude, surface or use other functions of SolidWorks.
The main purpose of the CommandManager is to give you easy access to all commands without
fumbling with the menus, and even access to customized groups of icons that are not available on
a single default toolbar, without cluttering the entire screen with toolbars.
Figure 1.3 shows the CommandManager with all the tabs available in a default setup.

Here you will find many functions that you can use to build a new 3D model, or sketch .
You can customize the CommandManager and within it visualize functions that belong to a pre-set
area, for example Features, Sketch, Evaluate, etc.
To do this and to include more functions right click on one of the tabs and add the desired new
tab, for example “Surface” (Figure 1.4).

You can also create your own personalized tabs.


For this right-click on one of the tabs (Features, Sketch, etc) then select “Customize
CommandManager” (Figure 1.5).

This will open the Customize window (Figure 1.6) with a list of all tabs available.

To create a new tab, right click on the new tab icon (figure 1.7), and choose “Empty tab”, then
assign the desired tab name.

In the window “Customize”, go to Commands, then within Categories, select the desired Buttons
and drag and drop them , and place these in the “Command” space in the your new Tab (Figure
1.8).

1.2 Task pane

The task pane is the window where it is found different functions of SolidWorks.
The task pane is located in the right-hand side of the user interface. You`ll find a tutorial on this in
the SolidWorks Resources.

1.3 Help menu


The SolidWorks Help menu is located in the “Title Bar menu”, as show in figure 1.11.
The Help menu contains supporting material on all commands and capabilities of the software, or
how to assemble different parts.
