9. Describe what the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is.


The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area of approximately 997 800km (620 000
square miles). That is equivalent to approximately three times the size of France.
The swirling waters in this area of the Pacific Ocean collect debris, plastic and
fishing waste. Approximately 70% of all waste in this area is hidden below the
surface.
10. Explain why plastic in the ocean is a problem.
As plastics in the oceans break down, the chemicals released contribute to
increased climate change.
