Steering System Sheet

Problem 1: A Passenger car has the given data:

Gross vehicle weight (GVW)=15 kN Wheelbase =2556 mm

Kingpin axis to wheel center offset = 40 mm Wheel tread in front axle = 1640 mm
C.G is 760 mm behind the front axle Fitted with tire radius = 320 mm
It is required to do the Following

1 Put a suitable design for the steering trapezium (track rod length, track rod arm, mounting
angle) for this bus and compare your design with the theoretical Ackerman relationship
between inner and outer steer angle at (0, 10, 20, 30, 40) inner wheel angle.
2 Determine the recommended cross section dimensions for the track rod arms if it is ellipse
cross section with aspect ratio=1.5.
3 Determine the recommended diameter for the track rod if it is with circular cross section and
check it for buckling.

Problem 2: Passenger car with gross weight has 2000 kg when fully loaded, with 50% of this car
weight on the front axle. Wheelbase is 2650 mm, and wheel trade is 1580 mm, steering wheel
radius is 250 mm, and overall steering ratio is 26:1, kingpin steering offset is 18 mm and tires
diameter are 310 mm.
It is required to do the Following

1. Calculate the driver effort to steer this vehicle.

2. Put a suitable design for the steering trapezium if the track rod arm length is 0.16 of the track
rod length.
3. calculate the recommended dimensions of the track rod arm for the ellipse cross-section if the
aspect ratio is 1.5
Problem 3 A Passenger car has the given data:

Gross vehicle weight (GVW)=14 kN, Vehicle wheelbase =2600 mm

Wheel tread in front axle = 1640 mm, C.G is 960 mm behind the front axle
Kingpin axis to wheel center offset = 40 mm, Fitted with tire radius = 310 mm

It is required to do the Following

1. Put a suitable design for the steering trapezium (track rod length, track rod arm, mounting
angle) for this bus and compare your design with the theoretical Ackerman relationship between
inner and outer steer angle at (0, 10, 20, 30, 40) inner wheel angle.
2. Determine the recommended cross section dimensions for the track rod arms if it is
ellipse cross section with aspect ratio=1.5.
3. Determine the recommended diameter for the track rod if it is with circular cross section
and check it for buckling.
4. Calculate the turning radius of the outer tire if the inner tire angle is 40 º 5. If the steering
wheel turns 1.1 turns, calculate the tie rod transitional distance if the pinion diameter is 29 mm.
Problem 4: A Passenger car has the given data:

Gross vehicle weight (GVW)=18 kN, Vehicle wheelbase =2500 mm

Wheel tread in front axle = 1640 mm, C.G is 940 mm behind the front axle
Kingpin axis to wheel offset = 38 mm, Fitted with tire radius = 320 mm

It is required to do the Following

1. Put a suitable design for the steering trapezium (track rod length, track rod arm, mounting angle)
for this passenger car and compare your design with parallel steer relationship between inner and
outer steer angle at (0, 10, 20, 30, 40) of inner wheel.
2. Determine the recommended cross section dimensions for the track rod arms if it is circular
cross section.
3. Determine the recommended diameter for the track rod if it is with circular hollow section and
check it for buckling.
4. Calculate the maximum axial force on tie rod due to braking force.
5. Calculate the outer tire steering angle to achieve turning radius 10 m of inner tire.
