Power System Protection

Assignment
1. What are the causes of faults in power system?
2. What are the different types of faults in power system transmission line?
3. What are the elements of switchgear?
4. Describe the operation of relay and circuit breaker using a diagram.
5. What are the essential qualities of protection system? Explain each.
6. What do you mean by primary and backup protection?
7. What is earthing? What is the objective of earthing?
8. Write the short note on following:
a) Pick-up level b) Primary relay c) Auxiliary relay d) Reach
e) Under-reach f)Over-reach g) Overlapping h) Reset time
9. What are the applications of CTs and PTs in power system?
10. Explain the secondary of transformer should not be open.
11. Explain the principle of distance relays stating clearly the difference between impedance relay,
reactance and mho relay. Indicate the difference on R-X diagrams and show where each type is
suitable.
12. Classify the electromagnetic relay. Describe the construction and working principle of each type of
relay.
13. Explain the difference between a CT used for instrumentation and CT used for protection.
14. The one-line diagram of a simple power system is shown in Fig. below. A symmetrical 3-phase fault
occurs at the motor terminals. Determine the fault current. Assume the system to be operating at
no-load and at the rated voltage immediately before occurrence of the fault.

15. If the fault current is 2000 A, the relay setting is 50% and the CT ratio is 400/5. Find the value of
plug setting multiplier.
