Max-Min and Max-Product Composition in Crisp

Relations gives similar results because for crisp
numbers
x.y = min (x,y)

Cartesian Product of Fuzzy Sets: - (for revision of students)
Let A be a Fuzzy set defined on Universe X and Let B be a Fuzzy set defined on
Universe Y.
Cartesian Product between A & B is indicated as AXB and can be represented by a
Fuzzy Relation ‘R’ (defined on X X Y) is given by:- R=A X B
where membership function of R is given by:-
μR(x, y) = μA×B(x, y) = min{μA(x), μB(y)}
X and Y are different set of universe

Question:- Check if R is an Equivalence OR Tolerance Relation?

Tolerance and Equivalence Relations (Fuzzy Relations)

Here, relation R is tolerance relation. Now, we’ll perform

compositions to reform Tolerance relation into Equivalence relation.

Tolerance and Equivalence Relations (Fuzzy Relations)

Here, composition is performed again and can be verified that R2 is

transitive. (Exercise for students)

Since, R2 is Reflexive, Symmetric and Transitive, R2 is an Equivalence relation.

Hence, a Tolerance relation can be converted into Equivalence relation by
performing Composition operation on itself for a maximum of n-1 times where n is
cardinality of relation R.
