INTRODUCTION
Literacy is popurly understood as an ability to

Read and write in at least one method of writing

An understanding reflected by mainstream dictionaries. In

this view , illiteracy would be considered to be the inability
to read and write. The widening of the traditional concept of
literacy took place as consensus emerger among
researchers in composition studies , education research
,and anthropological linguistics that it makes little sense
to speak of reading or writing .But It is not as simple as it
sounds . Reading and writing abilities vary across different
culteres and contexts ,and these too are constantly
shifting.

Nowdays reading encompasses compex visual and digital

media as well as printed material . an elderly person who
can read the newspapers might struggle to get information
from google.

Similarly, different culture will have different perception of

literacy . The writing tradition of english language make
reading comprehension as essential part of literacy , but
this might not be as important in cultures or groups that
read printed material

IMPORTANCE OF LITERACY
Student need literacy in order to engage with the written
word in everyday life.

Think of how often you use your own reading skills in every
day life. It,s not just article like this one that require literacy,
but signs , labels, and the Message on your phone, Too.

The same goes for writing . Now days, even phone calls have
given way to instant messaging and text based
communication, making the ability to read all the more
important.

But beyond the functional level, literacy play avital role in

transforming students into socially engage citizens. Being
able to read and write means being able to keep up with
current events, communicate effectively, and understand
the issue that are shaping our world.
WAYS TO SUPPORT
LITERACY DEVELOPMENT
Literacy development should be a combined effort between
home and school. Here are a few things you can do to
support early learners literacy skills.

➢ Encourage reading
Reading is the first pillar of literacy, so encourage young
learners to immerse themselves in it frequently and deeply.
This should involve exposure to a broad variety of different
genres, such as newspapers,, comics, novels, magazines,
films, reference material, and website.

➢ Discuss text together

Actively discussing what has been read encourage learners
to make connections and think deeply about the ideas
contained in texts. Follow up the reading or viewing of text
with discussion of what it made learners think and feel.
➢ Make use of the library
Immersing children in huge range of text encourage them to
dive in and explore. There’s no better place to do this than
the school or community library

PURPOSE OF LITERACY
PROGRAMME
➔Literacy is the integration of lisetening, speaking
,reading, and writing,, for communication and
learning.(Department of Education and Science)
➔This learner is a collection of well researched and
developmentally appropriate worksheets. These aim
at enhancing the core listening, speaking, reading ,
and writing, skills among young children
➔The well researched and integrated curriculum
ensures not only academic but also cognitive,
creative, linguistic, social and emotional skill
enhancement in children.
ADVANTAGE OF ADULT EDUCATION
The main aim and importance of adult education are to level
the playing field for certain adults in the professional world.
So with access to education, they have a second chance at
better career or an advancement in their current career. They
can even develop new skills that will help them with their
professional lives. While expanding their knowledge and
skillset, they can also expand their career prospects. And
such adult education also teaches the student how to put
their skills and knowledge into practical use.

EXPAND ACCESS TO AdULT EDUCATION

Adult education has been practised in our country sin ce
its inception . it is a comprehensive concept that
encompassen understanding of their issues, rights , and
roles in a changing society . it is informal and intened for
adult ages 15 and above. It emphasis lifelong learning and
is a career – oriented concept. It tries to affect a positive
and noticeable change in people , knowledge , skills and
attitudes . In order to educate a persons, the idea of adult
education has evolved from example adult literacy to ‘’
inclusive education, where the emphasis is placed moral
and spritiual as well as physical, intellectual, social ,
economics , and aestthetic components.

The importance of adult education can be summarised by

the statement of the kothari commission that ‘’ no nation
can leave its security only to police and the army ; to larger
extent, national security depends upon the education of
citizen , their knowledge of affairs, their character and their
ability to participate effectively in security measures .

The census of 2011 reveals tha between the ages of 15 and

35, nearly 20 % of population was found to be illiterate,
with large in consistencies across all the states .The state
of Bihar,Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Uttar pradesh have more
than 25 % illiterate people between the ages of 15 and
35. Female literacy remains at 65.8 %, according to data
available until 2018. India is also home to be the largest
number of iiliterate people in world, with over 25 %of the
population still uneducated.
STEP TAKEN BY GOVERMENT
Adult education has been part of government policy right
from the first five year plan (1951-1956) itself. A total of
Rs7.5 crore was sanctioned for the development of adult
and social education in india. “Sakshar Bharath” was
launched in the 11th five year plan with the goal of
achieving an 80 percent literacy rate and reducing the
gender gap in literacy to 10 percent. The main focus of the
programme was on Sc, St, minorities , and rural women
.Apart from this, various other initiatives have been
launched for adult education programme, ranging from
the National Adult education programme to the National
literacy mission.

The National Board for Adult education was formed, and

the programme was launched in 1978 with the objective
of promoting literacy skills among the socially and
economically deprived section of society to help them
overcome helpessness and achieve self reliance. The new
education Policy of 2020 has changed the term”adult
education” to “educatin for all” under the “new india
literacy programme” for the year 2022-2027. The
programme will be run by volunteers, and students and
teachers registered under the unified district system for
education will participate.

Even after various initiatives and highly funded

programme, there are still many gaps in adult education.
The irregularity of such intiatives and the non regular
conduct of classes remain a hinderance. Some states are
still far behind on the literacy rate of their adult
population. The lack of fudes and the design of the
programme which is detached from ground realities, leasd
to and outdated and unskilled outcome.According to the
ministry of education, there are still 18.12crore adult in the
country who are illitertate, whereas the number of illertrate
adult was 25.76 crore 2011, of which 16.88crore were
women.

The focus of adult education programmes should not be

limited to providing basic literacy. It should encompass the
intergration of facilitation and skilled development for basic
literacy. The government school located in the village can be
good ground for the development of adult education
centres.

Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikash Yojana can

be extended to village, where skill development program can
be designed to equip them with modern and timely skill to
live in advanced world.Adult education that is inclusive is a
step towards effective citizenship. The issue of
accessibility to the the justice system, public institution and
more significantly, imparting constitutional literarcy, can be
solved through effective adult literacy programmes.

PROBLEM faced by me
As we know that to make this programme successful we
have to interact with society. And in the society there no
chance of having no any problem. Some them that I have
faced during project are:-

➔Collecting photographs because female did not wanted

to give a picture.

➔Collecting adhar card xerox.

➔Choosing illiterate persons
➔Traditional thinking
➔Lots of superstition
➔Lack of time

➔Lac of support
CONTENT ANALYSIS
Literacy is not just as word but our vision that shows us a
golden future. It breaks the tightness of the conservative
current and provides us an independent and brighter
tomorrow. Literacy is the key of development in the
absence of which a beautiful but a hollow building would
stand which will be beautiful but not sustainable. While
taking care of these far reaching words ,bihar government
initiated a scheme which is ‘’ADULT LITERCY
PROGRAMME’’

I had done my literacy project at a small village, where about

150 families live .when I visited this village then I found that ;
illiterate people do not give regular education to their
childeren and we should not forget that our present is the
futue of tomorrow and if we are bad today then we can not
imagine a vibrant future tommorrow.

I taking care of all these things,I selected to 10 people who

were illiterate as well as not aware of the education of their
children and women of their names. I had trouble initially
but gradually they become aware towars education and
understood it’s importance.
Conclusion
There are hundreds of millions of adults who have never gone to
school and tens ofmillions of children who do not attend school orwho
will drop out before they acquire literacy skills. Forthese reasons, the
size ofthe illiterate population will probably stay near one billion
overthe next two decades. The majority of these people can learn to
read and write if given an opportunity.
The expense involved in providing quality literacy programs in Third
World settings is small compared to that of formal education;
furthermore, arguments that these resources should be used for the
formal school system make little sense because educated parents are the
foundation ofan effective formal school system. A balanced program
that funds research, evaluation, program design, and implementation
is needed in every country with high rates ofilliteracy if social progress
is to move ahead quickly. Donor agencies, even those that do not have
education as their focus, should support the development ofsuccessful
adult literacy programs.
At the present rate, that time will come well after 2050, but a few
billion dollars over the next 20 years could bring that moment into the
lifetime ofthe present generation. The benefits ofthis acceleration
ofhumanprogress would be immense. At that time, everyone will be
able to read the names of the gods before they die.
