Tutorial Questions

1. Find the shear forces and bending moments in the beam shown below. Plot their shear force and Bending
moment diagrams

2. A cantilever beam of length 2 m carries the point loads as shown in Fig. Draw the S.F.
and B.M. diagrams for the cantilever beam.

3. A cantilever beam of length 5 m carries the uniformly distributed and uniformly varying loads as shown in the
Fig. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the cantilever beam.

4. Find the internal torques at points B and C of the circular shaft subjected to three concentrated torques

5. The Aluminum road AB is bonded to the brass rod. Knowing that the portion CD of the brass rod is hollow and
has an inner diameter of 40mm, determine the angle of twist at the end A. (G Alum = 27GPa; GBrass = 39GPa)

7. A torque of magnitude 4kN is applied at the end A of 2.5m long composite shown below. Knowing that the shear

(a) If the shear stress is not to exceed 80 N/mm2, find its diameter.
(b) What percent saving in weight would be obtained if this shaft is replaced by a hollow one whose internal
diameter equals to 0.6 of the external diameter, the length, the material and maximum shear stress being the
same?

9. A hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 is to transmit 375 kW power at 100 rpm. The maximum torque being 20%
greater than the mean. The shear stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm2 and twist in a length of 4 m not to exceed 2°.
Calculate its external and internal diameters which would satisfy both the above conditions. (Assume modulus of
rigidity, G = 0.85 x 105 N/mm2.)

10. Draw the Mohr’s Circle of the stress element shown below and:
i. Determine the principle stresses and the maximum shear stresses.
ii. Find the stress components when it is inclined at 30° clockwise. Draw the corresponding stress elements.

A beam of length 6m is simply supported at its ends and carries two point loads of 48kN and 40kN at a distance of
1m and 3m respectively from the left support. Determine the deflection under each load. [Take E = 2 105 N/mm2
and I = 85 106 mm4]

11. A steel cantilever beam of 6m long carries 2 point loads 15kN at the free end and 25kN at a distance of 2.5 m
from the free end. Determine:
a. The slope at free end ii. The deflection at the free end
12. A beam carries 4 m long simply supported at its ends, carries a point load W at its centre. If the slope at the ends
of the beam is not to exceed 1°, find the deflection at the centre of the beam.
13. A beam 6 m long, simply supported at its ends, is carrying a point load of 50 KN at its centre. The moment of
inertia of the beam is 78 x 106 mm4. If E for the material of the beam = 2.1 X 10 5 N/mm2. Calculate deflection
at the centre of the beam and slope at the supports.
14. A load P is applied to a steel rod supported as shown by an aluminum plate into which a 12mm.-diameter hole
has been drilled. Knowing that the shearing stress must not exceed 180 MPa in the steel rod and 70 MPa in the
aluminum plate, determine the largest load P that can be applied to the rod.
15. Link AB, of width b 5.50 mm and thickness t 5.6 mm, is used to support the end of a horizontal beam. Knowing
that the average normal stress in the link is 2140 MPa, and that the average shearing stress in each of the two
pins is 80 MPa, determine (a) the diameter d of the pins, (b) the average bearing stress in the link.

16. The following observations were made during a tensile test on a mild steel specimen of 40 mm diameter and 200
mm long: Elongation with 40,000 N load (within the limit of proportionality) = 0.0304 mm, Yield load = 165,000
N, Maximum load = 245,000 N, Length of the specimen at fracture = 252 mm, Determine the yield stress, the
modulus of elasticity, the ultimate stress and the percentage elongation.
17. A steel bar ABCD of varying cross-section is subjected to the axial forces as shown in the Figure below. Find
the value of P for equilibrium. If the modulus of elasticity E = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2, determine the elongation of the
bar.

18. Show from first principles that σt = 2σL for longitudinal and tangential stresses acting on a cylindrical pressure
vessel. (Hint: first derive the equations for σt and σL)
19. A cylindrical Pressure vessel 400mm in diameter with wall thickness of 20 mm is subjected to an internal pressure
of 4.5 MN/mm2.
a. Calculate the tangential and longitudinal stresses in the steel
b. To what value may the internal pressure be increased if the stress in the steel is limited to 120MN/mm2?
c. If the internal pressure were increased until the vessel bursts, sketch the type of fracture that would
occur.
20. A cylindrical Pressure vessel is expected to have a wall thickness of 18 mm will be subjected to an internal
pressure of 2.2 kN/mm2. If the tangential stress in the vessel is estimated to be 24 kPa l. Calculate the radius of
the pressure vessel

n. To what value may the internal pressure be increased if the stress in the steel is limited to 88 kN/mm2?

21. A load of 100N falls through a height of 2cm onto a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a vertical bar 1.5m
long and of 105cm2 cross- sectional area. The upper end of the vertical bar is fixed. What is the maximum
instantaneous stress induced in the vertical bar if E = 200GPa?
22. A weight of 10kN falls by 30mm on a collar rigidly attached to a vertical bar 4m long and 1000mm 2 in section.
What will be the strain (E=210GPa)?
23. A load of 100N falls through a height of 2cm onto a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a vertical bar 1.5m
long and of 105cm2 cross- sectional area. The upper end of the vertical bar is fixed. What is the maximum
instantaneous elongation in the vertical bar if E = 200GPa?
24. A load of 100N falls through a height of 2cm onto a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a vertical bar 1.5m
long and of 105cm2 cross- sectional area. The upper end of the vertical bar is fixed. What is the strain energy
stored in the vertical bar if E = 200GPa?
