ENGINEER IN SOCIETY

Engineering is the science of solving technical problem and developing new

technology and infrastructure. It involves the application of the principles of
science and mathematics to solve real world problems and to innovate new
products.
An Engineer is a person who uses scientific knowledge to design, construct, and
maintain engines and machines or structures such s roads, railway and bridges.
They use scientific knowledge to proffer solution to societal problems.
Engineering as a profession has various branches;
✓ Electrical/Electronic Engineering
✓ Computer Engineering
✓ Civil Engineering
✓ Mechanical Engineering
✓ Chemical Engineering
✓ Agricultural Engineering
✓ Marine Engineering
✓ Biomedical Engineering
The engineering family is made up of some members. In this family, each member
has specific function or functions that is made up of division of labour. The reason
for the division of labour is to make work easy and for maximum efficiency. The
contribution of each of the family unit is needed for accomplishment of some
projects. The cadres of the engineering family are;
➢ Engineers
➢ Technologist
➢ Technicians
➢ Craftsmen
Craftsmen: they are the lowest in terms of all the members of the engineering
family. They are the first and the oldest members of the engineering family because
they existed before the modern-day engineers. They are usually not schooled or at
most have a senior secondary school certificate (SSCE) or a certificate that proves
that they have been trained before they are allowed to work with professional
engineers during finishing operations e.g Carpenters, mechanics, electricians,
masons, plumbers, welders e.t.c. Craftsmen must be highly skilled to carry out their
duties effectively.
Technicians: the technicians are usually the direct supervisors to the craftsmen in
the engineering workplace. They are the group that comes after the craftsmen from
the bottom of the energy family. The qualification of technicians is usually higher
than that of craftsmen. They have ordinary national diploma (OND) from a technical
college. The level of skill a technician acquires is usually more than that of
craftsman so they can correct any craftsman that makes mistake in carrying out
their assigned duty.
Technologist: the technologist comes third in the ranking of the engineering team
from the bottom of the hierarchy. They have higher academic qualifications than
technicians and craftsmen. A technologist is expected to have a higher national
diploma (HND) certificate from any engineering program carried out in the
polytechnics. They act as the interface between the engineer and the technician.
He sends the information from the technician to the engineer for the engineer to
take note and sort out ways to solve any challenge encountered in any of the
projects being carried out.
Engineers: the engineers are on the top-level in the hierarchy of the engineering
family. An engineer is expected to acquire a degree in any engineering fields. The
degree is called Bachelor in Engineering. Most engineers go further to acquire their
masters and doctorate certificates. By training, engineers are equipped with
creative minds for mathematical, analytical and managerial skills.
For the engineering industry to operate effectively, there needs to be a skill-mix
ratio between the various cadres of the engineering family. The international
labour organization recommends a ratio of 1:5:25.
Roles of Engineering in Society

Quackery
This is the characteristic practice of quacks or charlatans who pretend to have
knowledge and skills that they do not possess.
A quack is a person who dishonestly claims to have special knowledge and
practicing a skill he/she does not have. Quackery can endanger lives, cause physical
and financial harm, and great anxiety and regret among the public. A quack can
easily do a shoddy construction work for immediate gains because he or she has
little or nothing to lose.
Engineering Contracts
Contracts are agreement in which a person or business agrees to specific terms and
conditions that can be legally enforced. In a contract, responsibilities and
obligations are outlined and agreed upon by te two parties involved.
Engineering contracts are legal agreements between a business and an engineering
company detailing service promised, and payment for those services.
Functions of Engineering Contract
1 Scope of work: it clearly lays out what is expected of the contracted engineer. To
be completely clear, the company proposing the work should outline each task that
is part of the project and provide deadlines. They should also be clear about their
vision for the project and the end goal.
2 Period of Performance: - Engineering contracts should give the expected time
frame for the project and a deadline for total completion. Companies usually
provide payment for the project at its beginning, so it is especially important to set
deadline in a contract.
3 Payment: - Contracts make sure that products and services are paid for in a timely
manner. An engineering contract should outline when payments will be received,
from whom and how much. Some projects with a longer time span will be pad in
installments at preset milestones in the progress of the project. If this is the case,
the contract should lay out these milestones and payment amounts.
4 Termination: - Engineering contracts usually contain termination clauses. These
types of clauses specify how, and for what reasons the contractor or customer can
terminate the agreement.
Engineers’ duties in execution of contracts
(i) Notifying the contractor of the commencement date
(ii) Reviewing programmes
(iii) Issuing instruction (including variations)
(iv) Inspection and testing of the works
(v) Issuing notices to correct failures
(vi) Determining the reduction in the contract price for unremedied defects
or damage
(vii) Issuing the performance certicate
(viii) Assessing and making fair determination for additional costs and time

Risk Management
Risk management is the process of identifying, accessing and controlling threats to
an organization’s capital, earnings and operations. This risk stern from a variety of
sources, incuding financial uncertainties, legal liabilities, technological issues
strategic management errors, accidents and natural disaster.
Risk Management Tools
(i) Advance warning
o Adversely affect the work of the contractor’s personnel
o Adversely affect the works when completed
o Increasing the contract price
o Delaying the work
(ii) Recovery programme
o Revised method for expediting progress and completing on time
o Cost ‘s at contractor’s risk
(iii) Meetings
o The Engineers can require attendance at meeting of the
contractor’s representative, other contractors, subcontractors or
suppliers
o The Engineer should keep records and supply them to others in
attendance
(iv) Records
o Monitor contractors’ contemporary records after events giving rise
to a claim.
o Instruct contractor to keep additional record
o Inspect those records (during normal working hours or as agreed)
(v) Payment
o The Engineer is much more involved in the payment provisions
o The Engineer must give reasons and details of its calculations if it
withholds any payment from the contractor.

Ethics of Engineers
Ethics are moral principles that governs behaviour or the conducting of an activity.
Morals are shortly defined as codes or guides of conduct (implicit or explicit) that
are based on personal long-standing beliefs and values or those of surrounding
society.
Code of Ethics of Engineers
Engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honour and dignity of the engineering
profession by:
(i) Using their knowledge and skills for the enhancement of human welfare
(ii) Being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity their clients (including
their employee) and the public.
(iii) Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering
profession.
(iv) Supporting the professional and technical societies of their discipline.
