Course Code CSE E09 L-P-T-Cr.: 3 0 0 3 Semester: VII

Course Objectives: (1) To develop an understanding of the fundamentals and technical aspects of Cloud
Computing.
(2) To understand the Management of cloud services.
(3) To learn the necessity of Virtualization along with various terminologies and the
keywords used in Cloud Computing and virtualization.
(4) To learn the storage network design and optimization.
UNIT – I : CLOUD COMPUTING FUNDAMENTALS (10 Hours)
Introduction: Computing definition, Eras of computing: Mainframe, Cluster, Grid, Distributed vs Parallel
computing, Problem areas, Cloud Computing definition, Cloud computing stack: compossibility, infrastructure,
platforms, virtual appliances, communication protocols, Cloud deployment models, Cloud service models
Benefits and challenges of cloud computing, public vs private clouds, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
Examining the value proposition: Measuring the cloud’s value: the laws of cloudonomics, cloud computing
obstacles, specifying service level agreements, Defining Licensing models.
UNIT – II : VIRTUALIZATION AND CLOUD PLATFORMS (10 Hours)
Virtualization: Introduction, characteristics of virtualized environments, Taxonomy of virtualization techniques,
Hypervisor, virtualization and cloud computing, pros and cons of virtualization, Load balancing and
virtualization, Technology examples: Xen, VMware, Hyper V.
Cloud Platforms: Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure
UNIT – III: EXPLORING CLOUD INFRASTRUCTURE (10 Hours)
Cloud management: Administrating the Clouds: Management responsibilities, Lifecycle management, Cloud
Management Products, Emerging Cloud Management Standards: DMTF cloud management standards, Cloud
Commons and SMI.
Cloud Security: Securing the Cloud: the security boundary, security service boundary, security mapping,
Securing Data: brokered cloud storage, access Storage location and tenancy, encryption, auditing and compliance.
UNIT – IV : CLOUD APPLICATIONS AND SIMULATION TOOL (10 Hours)
Cloud Applications: Healthcare, Protein Structure Prediction, Gene Expression Data Analysis for Cancer
Diagnosis, Geoscience, Social Networking, Media Applications and Multiplayer Online Gaming.
Simulation tool: Cloud Simulator (CloudSim): Broker, Cloud Information Service (CIS), Cloudlets, Host,
Virtual Machines (VMs), Cloud entities.
Advanced Topics in Cloud Computing: A Reference Model for Market-oriented Cloud Computing, Federated
Clouds/Inter Cloud: Characterization, Federation Stack, Technologies for Cloud Federations.

Course Outcomes: After completion of this course the students should be able to:

Physical Systems as a Service.
(3) Learning different layers of cloud technologies.
(4) Finding practical solutions such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, SalesForce.com,
etc. solutions as well as theoretical solutions.
