Design and Implementation of a Web-Based System That Will Link

Farmers to Buyers
Submitted by: Edoror Robert Osegimen

Abstract
This project focuses on designing and implementing a web-based system to connect farmers
with buyers directly. The system eliminates intermediaries, increases transparency in
agricultural transactions, and provides a marketplace where farmers can list their products,
and buyers can browse and purchase them. The system was built using PHP, MySQL, HTML,
CSS, and JavaScript, ensuring scalability, user-friendliness, and security. Through testing, it
was found that the platform improves communication and market accessibility, providing a
valuable solution to long-standing inefficiencies in agricultural markets.
Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The agricultural sector is vital for economic development, yet farmers face numerous
challenges in accessing markets. Most rely on intermediaries who often exploit them by
underpaying for their produce. Buyers, on the other hand, face difficulties finding fresh and
affordable products directly from farmers. This study seeks to design a web-based system
that bridges this gap by providing a transparent and efficient platform.

1.2 Problem Statement

Farmers often lack direct access to markets, leading to reliance on intermediaries and
reduced profitability. Buyers, meanwhile, encounter challenges sourcing fresh produce
reliably. These issues create inefficiencies in agricultural supply chains, hindering growth
and development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objectives include:
- Creating a user-friendly web platform to link farmers and buyers.
- Enhancing transparency in agricultural transactions.
- Reducing reliance on intermediaries.
- Improving market access for farmers.

1.4 Scope of the Study

This project focuses on designing a system with features such as user registration, product
listing, messaging, and an admin dashboard. The system targets farmers and buyers in
localized regions, with scalability for broader markets.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The system enhances farmers' profitability, provides buyers with reliable access to
products, and fosters economic growth through efficient market linkages.
Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Overview of Existing Systems
Several platforms, such as FarmCrowdy, address similar challenges. However, they often
lack user-friendliness, affordability, and scalability.

2.2 Role of Technology in Agriculture

Technologies like IoT, AI, and web applications have transformed agriculture, enabling
precision farming and efficient market systems.

2.3 Challenges Addressed by the Proposed System

- Dependency on intermediaries.
- Lack of market transparency.
- Poor communication between farmers and buyers.

2.4 Related Studies

Studies highlight the need for transparent systems but often fail to address cost and
scalability.
