Function
 Definition: A function from a set X to a set Y is a rule f which assigns
to every element x of X a unique element y of Y .
Mathematically it can be written as
f: X → Y
f(x)=y for all x belong to X
Function is like a Machine
It is important to note that:
 Functions are often denoted by letters such as f, g, h, F, G, H and so on.
 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑦𝑦
Rule of Four

Exercise
Let 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 2.
(a) Find the value of y when x is zero.
(b) What is 𝑓𝑓(3)?
(c) What values of 𝑥𝑥 give 𝑦𝑦 a value of 11?
(d) Are there any values of 𝑥𝑥 that give 𝑦𝑦 a value of 1?
Onto/One-One Function

 If range(f) = Y , the full codomain, then f is said to be an onto function.

 A function is said to be ONE-TO-ONE function if distinct elements of domain

has distinct images in co-domain.
