TOPIC1: EARTH’S NATURAL RESOURCES

LO: To be able to learn what are the natural resources and

where they are available.
Keywords:
Resources
Renewable
Non-renewable
Check our previous knowledge

What are the five basic

things we need to live?
Why do we depend on
nature?
Can you survive without
nature?
What do you get from
nature?
Let’s check our understanding

 Fill in the blanks:

 Our sun will die in …….. billion years.
 Our ………….. made use of the natural resources they found around them.
 Oil is a ………………. resource.
 Short answer questions:
 Differentiate needs and wants with examples.
 The rising population is a huge challenge to meet our needs and demands. Give reasons.
MEETING OUR NEEDS
As time went by,
we found more and
more ways to use
what Earth
provides: things like
metals, gas, and
oil.
Today, we still have the same basic needs
as our ancestors. There are also lots of
things we want.
Needs Want
Needs refers to an Wants are described as
individual’s basic the goods and services
, which an individual
requirements that
like to have as a part of
must be fulfilled, in his or her lifestyle
order to survive
OUR NEEDS AND WANTS

With the rise in

population, which has
doubled in the last 50
years, this has ultimately
become a
challenge……why?
WHAT ARE NATURAL RESOURCES
A natural resource is something
which occurs naturally – without
any help from us, it is also
something which we can make use
of.
Examples of natural resources are,
soil, water, wind, sunlight, coal and
oil.
We also use a lot of plastic,
however plastic is NOT a natural
resource. We make that in factories.
WHERE DO WE FIND NATURAL RESOURCES??
Natural resources are found
everywhere, however they are
not shared equally
Our early ancestors made do
with the resources around them,
but we didn’t!
We use resources from all over
the world. When you eat an
orange, you are making use of
the soil , water and sunshine.
EARTHS RESOURCES ARE CATEGORISED
INTO TWO GROUPS:
 Renewable resources –  Non- Renewable resources –
 Resources that we can keep on  This is a resources which takes
using and it won’t run out. years to form. We are using it up
much faster than it is forming,
 We can also define renewable therefore one day we may find that
resources as a resource that there’s hardly any left.
nature continues to provide or that  We can also define Non –
we can grow more of. Renewable resources as a resource
that we will run out of one day
 Examples of renewable resources
are Wind, rain, sunlight, wood,  Examples of Non – Renewable
plants, and animals. resources are fossil fuels, which
include petroleum, coal and natural
gas
Renewable and Non- Renewable
resources
THE BIG CHALLENGE!
 We human beings face a huge challenge: a rising population and limited
natural resources
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED
 We, humans, depend on Earth’s natural…………………
 Our ………….. made use of the natural resources they found around
them.
 Oil is a ………………. Resource.
 ………………… is a renewable resource.
