1) A completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) as shown in Figure 1 is used to treat an industrial

waste, using a reaction that destroys the pollutant according to first-order kinetics, with
k=0.216/day. The reactor volume is 500 m3, the volumetric flow rate of the single inlet and
exit is 50 m3/day and the inlet pollutant concentration is 100 mg/L. Compute the outlet
concentration after treatment.

2) A 10 x 106 m3 lake fed by a polluted stream having a flow rate of 5.0 m3/s and pollutant
concentration equal to 10.0 mg/L. There is also a sewage outfall that discharges 0.5 m 3/s of
wastewater having a pollutant concentration of 100 mg/L directly to the lake. The stream and
sewage wastes have a decay rate coefficient of 2.0 day-1. Assuming the pollutant is completely
mixed in the lake and assuming no evaporation or other water losses or gains, find the steady-
state pollutant concentration in the lake.

3) A pond is used to treat a dilute municipal wastewater before the liquid is discharged into a
river. The inflow to the pond has a flow rate of 4000 m3/day and a BOD concentration of 25
mg/L. The volume of the pond is 20,000 m3. The purpose of the pond is to allow time for the
decay of BOD to occur before discharge into the environment. BOD decays in the pond with a
first-order rate constant equal to 0.25/day. With the help of a sketch, determine the BOD
concentration at the outflow of the pond, in units of mg/L.

4) A lake collects 5,000 m3/d of clean river waterflow of clean river waterflow. However, an
industrial wastewater flow is also discharged to the lake with 450 m3/d of untreated pollutant
concentration of 160 mg/L. The lake has a volume of 200, 000 m3. If the pollutant decays with
first-order kinetics with a reaction rate constant of 0.70/day, what is the steady-state
concentration of the pollutant in the lake.
