Biology Worksheet.no. – 1 (key answer)
Grade: 9____ Date: ____________ Name: _________________________________ Roll No. _____
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Note: Answers for questions without space can be written on an A4 ruled sheet, stapled to the
worksheet and submitted along with the main worksheet.

a. Golgi apparatus b. Lysosomes c. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum d. Vacuoles
2. The undefined nuclear region of prokaryotes is also known as:
a. nucleus b. nucleolus c. nucleic acid d. nucleoid
3. Which of the following is not a function of vacuole?
a. storage b. providing turgidity and rigidity to the cell c. waste excretion d. locomotion
4. Amoeba acquires its food through a process, termed
a. exocytosis b. endocytosis c. plasmolysis d. both (a) and (b)
5. Which of the following are covered by single membrane?
a. mitochondria b. vacuole c. lysosome d. plastid
6. Living cells were discovered by _______________.
a. Robert Hooke b. Purkinje c. Leeuwenhoek d. Robert Brown
7. Cell wall of which one of these is not made up of cellulose?
a. Bacteria b. Hydrilla c. Mango tree d. Cactus
8. Find out the correct sentence.
a. Enzymes packed in lysosomes are made in RER.
b. RER and SER produce lipid and protein respectively.
c. ER is related with the destruction of plasma membrane.
d. Nucleoid is present inside the nucleoplasm of eukaryotic cell.
9. Organelle other than the nucleus, containing DNA is
a. ER b. Golgi apparatus c. Mitochondria d. Lysosomes
10. Lysosome arises from _____________
a. ER b. Golgi apparatus c. nucleus d. mitochondria

II. Name the following:

1. Site of protein synthesis – Ribosome(manufacturing unit)/ RER
2. Suicide bag of the cell – Lysosome
3. Storage sac of the cell – Vacuole
4. Power house of the cell – Mitochondria
5. Kitchen of the cell – Chloroplast
6. Provides shape and mechanical resistance to the cell against deformation – Cytoskeleton
III. Answer the following questions:
1. Where do we find Chloroplasts and Chromoplast pigments in plants?
Ans: Chloroplasts and Chromoplasts are the plastids present in all plant cells. Chloroplasts
contain the green colour pigments, present in the leaves, green-coloured stems, etc.
Chromoplasts contain the colourful pigments present in all colourful parts of the plant like
flowers and fruits, etc.
2. What are cytosol and cytoskeleton?
Ans. The semifluid part of the cell cytoplasm that is embedded between cell organelles is
known as cytosol. The cytoskeleton is a network of protein fibers found in the cell that serves
as a framework for the organelles.
3. What is osmosis? Where does an amoeba get its food?
Ans. Amoeba feeds on water-floating planktonic bacteria. It grows artificial feet, or
pseudopodia, to encircle the meal and then traps it in a sac-like structure called the food
vacuole, where food digestion takes place.
Osmosis is the passage of water (solvent) through a semipermeable membrane from a region
of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration. It can occur only in a
liquid medium; it cannot occur in solids or gases. Water is absorbed from the earth by plant
roots.
4. If you're given some vegetables to cook, you'll usually season them with salt. Vegetables release
water after being salted. Why?
Ans: When salt is added, a hypotonic medium is formed, which means that the concentration
of salt molecules is greater outside the vegetables than inside. As a result of osmosis, water
from the vegetables escapes.
5. What is the relationship between chromatin, chromatids, and chromosomes?
Ans: Chromatin is a thin thread-like structure made up of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and
proteins that combine to form a rod-like chromatid. A chromosome is formed when two
similar chromatids join together at a centromere.
6. Illustrate a prokaryotic cell and label it.
Ans: Pg. 54
7. Illustrate the mitotic and meiotic division of a cell with the help of a neat diagram. Write the
differences between these two types of cell divisions.
Ans : pg. 58

For the following questions two statements are given-one labelled Assertion
and the other labelled Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions
from the codes [a], [b], [c] and [d] as given below.

A) Both A and R are true and R is correct explanation of the A

B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the A
C) A is true, but R is false
D) A is false, but R is true
1. Assertion - Prokaryotic cells are primitive and larger than eukaryotic cells.
Reason Prokaryotic cells lack cytoplasmic organelles.

Ans : D , Prokaryotic cells are smaller in size as compared to eukaryotic cells. These cells
also lack cytoplasmic membrane bound organelles.

2. Assertion - Cells having cell wall withstand very dilute (hypotonic) external media without
bursting.
Reason -The cell wall exerts an equal pressure against the swollen cell.

Ans: A , In hypotonic medium, cells takes up water from the external medium by the
osmosis. Due to high amount of water inside, the cells swell up and build up pressure against
the cell wall. At this point, the cell exerts an equal pressure against the swollen cell. Thus,
because of the presence of cell wall, cells can withstand very dilute external media without
bursting.

3. Assertion- Chromosomes are constituted by DNA and protein.

Reason -These are thread-like structures present in nucleus.
Ans : C, Chromosomes are made up of DNA and proteins (i.e. histones). The thread- like
structures present in nucleus of the cell are called chromatinmaterial.

4. Assertion -Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is associated with synthesis of proteins.

Reason- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum do not possess ribosomes.

Ans : D, Rough endoplasmic reticulum is associated with synthesis of proteins, while smooth
endoplasmic reticulum synthesise fat molecules.

IV. Fill in the blanks:

1. Schleiden and Schwann proposed the cell theory.
2. If the medium surrounding the cell has a high water concentration, the cell will swell. (swell /
shrink).
3. The plasma membrane is flexible and is made of organic molecules called lipids and proteins.
4. When a living plant cell loses water through osmosis there is shrinkage or contraction of the
contents of the cell away from the cell wall. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis.
5. The nucleus has a double layered covering called nuclear membrane.
6. The process of using proteins and lipids produced by SER in building the cell membrane is called _____
Membrane biogenesis.
7. The daughter cells have same number of chromosomes as the mother cell in case of mitotic
division.
8. The primary function of leucoplasts is storage.
