Lab 01: Getting Started with Fanuc Robots

MFET 24800 Introduction to Robotics

OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the basic components that make up the Fanuc robot system
2. Gain familiarity with keys, switches, indicators, and ports of the Fanuc robot system
3. Learn how to safely power on/off the Fanuc robot and perform some basic tasks.
4. Gain experience of jogging the Fanuc robot using the teach pendant
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Fanuc robot with teach pendant
2. Lecture notes
PROCEDURES
1. Identify the basic components that make up the Fanuc robot system and get familiar with keys,
switches, indicators, ports of the Fanuc robot system.
Robot: type, model number, specifications, interfaces
Controller: model number, specifications, interfaces
Teach pendant: the layout of the teach pendant, individual keys, switches, indicators, buttons.
2. Understand the status bar of the teach pendant.
3. Get familiar with menu items when pressing MENU and FCTN.
4. For 200iD robots, check out what you get when pressing i key plus each of the following key:
MENU, SELECT, EDIT, DATA, FCTN, POSN, Jog Keys, DISP, COORD, and ENTER.
5. Understand the difference between T1, and Auto modes.
6. Be able to engage and release E-stop button.
7. Be able to reset alarms.
8. Be able to perform normal startup and shutdown procedures.
9. Be able to jog the robot around using the jog keys.
DEMONSTRATION IN LAB
Demonstrate to your lab instructor that you can jog the robot around using the jog keys.
LAB REPORT
Notes: 1) Please submit your work on Brightspace using a single PDF file; 2) Lab report should be
completed individually.
1. Identify the basic components of the Fanuc robot system. Drawing a block diagram of the
system to illustrate how the components are connected to each other. (20 points)
2. Explain the meanings of the icons on a typical status bar. (10 points)
Fault- This is to throw any errors or alarms, like the Deadman switch being released.
Hold- This indication is to let the operator know that the robot has been paused.
Step- This is to indicate that the robot is in step mode, sequencially stepping through the
program of the robot.
Busy- this is an indicator that the robot is busy in operation.
Running- this is to indicate that the robot is running a program.
I/O ENBL- this is to show the status of the operational I/O
Prod Mode- This indicator is to let the operator know that the robot is in Production mode.
TestCyC-
JOINT- This is to let the operator know the jog mode is Joint controlled.
XYZ- This is to let the operator know that the robot is being jogged in the XYZ coord system.
TOOL- This is to let the operator know that the robot is being jogged in the TOOL coord
system.

3. Explain the menu items when pressing MENU and FCTN. (20 points)
The menu and function options provide a list of accessible settings such as the utilities to setup
different functionalities on the robot, alarms to check the history of faults the robot has
thrown, IO to setup external and internal input and outputs, setup for initial robot setup,
and file for writing and reading programs for the robot to follow.

4. Explain the difference between T1 and Auto modes (e.g., purpose, when to use, things to pay
attention to, etc.). (10 points)
The difference between T1 and Auto mode is the speed at which the robot can move is limited.
Auto mode is designed for running automated programs and t1 mode is limited to
250mm/s for jogging purposes.

5. Write down the procedure to engage and release E-stop button. (10 points)
To engage the E-stop button press either the red button on the robot controller or the
right side of the teach pendant. To Disengage the E-stop rotate clockwise and pull out
on it.

6. Write down the procedure to reset alarms. (10 points)

To Reset any faults or alarms the Deadman switch must be depressed then, the shift and
reset button will be pressed to clear and faults in the system. After this you are free to
run a program or jog.

7. When jogging the Fanuc robot using the jog keys, identify at least four ways to stop the
motion of the robot arm immediately. (20 points)
The four different ways to stop the robot arm is engaging the estop on the teach pendant or
controller, releasing or gripping the Deadman’s switch more than halfway will stop the
robot, or pressing the hold button.
