Task No.

1 – ESSAY
Answer the questions that are being asked. Read the questions carefully and ensure you
understand what is being asked before you begin writing.

Social media have transformed political participation in the Philippines by giving the Filipinos an
easy to access information hub. However, social media diffuses challenges which include
dissemination of disinformation and divisive rhetoric. Such wide-scale prevalence of fake news
particularly during election seasons has confused and polarised much. The impact of processed
narratives of political candidates on candidate perception overshadow some of the originals. For
the ordinary Filipino, systemic challenges such as corruption, political dynasties and divisive
rhetoric. Corruption breeds a lack of trust from ordinary citizens in government, which denies
citizens the ability to look upward towards their system for justice and progress. Political
dynasties deny fresh blood into the political system and continue creating inequalities as power
is concentrated in a few families. Such divisive rhetoric shall accompany social media in
deepening divisions in society, creating an atmosphere heavy with hostility and mistrust.

In conclusion, politics can be viewed as the underlying point of social media activity and cinema,
which has of course changed the perspectives and conversations of the society. The portrayal
of nations, ideologies, and other political controversies in films and social media does in fact
control people’s perceptions as to what is the ‘ideal’ opinion as opposed to what lies beyond the
screen. Social Media allows the public to mobilize over certain causes, and cinema can
sometimes provide perspective over certain political events and issues. Nevertheless, it suffers
from the same negative aspects i.e. hostile conversations and antagonistic narratives all which
foster more divisions within society.Such inflamed speech will accompany social media in
widening societal differences, creating a hostile and mistrustful environment.

Ultimately, politics can be considered as the underlying point of social media activity and
movies, which has undoubtedly altered societal attitudes and conversations. The portrayal of
nations, ideologies, and other political disputes in films and social media does, in fact, shape
people's conceptions of what constitutes the 'ideal' viewpoint as opposed to what exists beyond
the screen. Social media enables the people to mobilize around specific causes, and movies
can occasionally provide perspective on certain political events and topics. Nonetheless, it
suffers from the same negative elements, namely unpleasant conversations and adversarial
narratives, all of which encourage further divisions inside.
