GOOGLE EARTH ENGINE FOR HYDROLOGICAL APPLICATIONS

This tutorial is prepared from a beginner perspective aiming to cater to

participants of varied backgrounds by presenting material in an easy to
understand format.
This workshop is designed for beginners who want to explore how cloud
platforms such as Google Earth Engine (GEE) can simplify hydrology-related
tasks. Google Earth Engine is a user-friendly, cloud-based platform that allows
us to work with satellite derived datasets without the requirement of a
sophisticated computer or advanced programming skills.
These handouts are designed in such a way that whether you are a student,
researcher, or a professional just starting with geospatial tools, the material shall
allow you to learn how to access and analyse data for hydrology applications.
➢ Introduction to Google Earth Engine
Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based platform that provides access to an extensive
collection of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets, enabling users to analyse and visualize
geospatial datasets at local and global levels. Its vast repository of geospatial datasets,
combined with cloud computing capabilities, makes it an ideal tool for scientific community
to detect changes, map trends, and quantify variations on Earth’s surface.

One of the key features of GEE is its historical satellite imagery, spanning over for more than
forty years. This archive is continually updated with newly ingested imagery on a daily basis,
offering users unparalleled access to global-scale datasets for data mining and analysis.

GEE supports a wide range of geospatial analyses through API platform, providing users a
user-friendly platform for efficient exploration, processing and visualization of large-scale
datasets.

➢ How GEE Works

a. Data Input: Users select datasets from GEE libraries or upload their own data.
b. Processing and analysis: User friendly scripts are written in JavaScript (or Python
via APIs) to process the data on cloud and analyse it.
c. Visualization and exporting: Results can be visualized in the form of maps, table,
charts, or exported for further analysis.

➢ Overview of what will be covered in Modules 2 to 6:

• Getting Started with GEE
• Exploring Various Datasets related to Hydrological Applications
• Working with Geospatial Datasets
• Visualization and Raster Operations
• Time Series Dataset Visualization and Plotting
