Chem 1A/B Lab Measuring Worksheet (5 pts)

You can find this worksheet in the Files section for your seminars Canvas course so that you can
see the photo better.

This worksheet was created because a significant number of students seem to have issues reading rulers
and volumes as well as squaring and cubing units. You will need a ruler that measures in cm. Note that
the answers to this worksheet get submitted through Canvas for your seminar. The due date is indicated
in Canvas but it can be done well before that date. Don’t wait until the last minute. Fill in all 8 blanks,
THEN go to Canvas and select the correct answer to each question.

Using a ruler fill in the blanks 1 through 6 regarding the drawn rectangle. Notice that although there are
10 mm in every cm, when you square units it is NOT 10 mm2 for one cm2. If you don’t understand how
to square and cube units, look for a file titled Squaring and Cubing Units for additional help.

a b

1) Length of line ab = ___________ cm

2) Length of line ab = ___________ mm
3) Length of line bc = ___________ cm
4) Length of line bc = ___________ mm
5) Area of rectangle = ___________ cm2
6) Area of rectangle = ___________ mm2

Measuring liquids can be a little more difficult. Two examples are provided on the next page that show a
drawing, which can make the meniscus look very clear, and a photo where you can see that actually
making the measurement is a bit harder to do. When reading both, you need to read at the bottom
of the meniscus. The drawing below shows how to read the bottom of the meniscus.
Graduated cylinder - A 10 or 25 mL graduated cylinder dispenses the volume you are reading from it to
about + 0.1 mL. 100 mL graduated cylinder has an error closer to + 0.5 mL so you MUST read graduated
cylinders to ONE decimal place. Again, please remember that the volume you are reading is the volume
the cylinder will pour out (dispense) to another container, not the exact volume of liquid inside the
cylinder itself. Liquid stays behind coating the cylinder.

7) Volume = ____________ mL

Buret - The photo is a buret which also dispenses a liquid. The buret has a smaller internal diameter and
can dispense volumes to + 0.02 mL, so you MUST read the volume to the SECOND decimal place. Two
people reading this buret should each be able to
read a volume that differs by no more than 0.02 mL.
Pay attention to the buret scale when reading the
volume. Note that it is inverted, as compared to
that of the graduated cylinder.

8) Volume = __________ mL

Many students also have significant issues making graphs for lab. Some of the requirements are listed
below.
1) Graphs must have title.
2) The x and y axis need to be labeled and units included, if applicable.
3) The data points need to be visible and typically connected smoothly, not connect-a-dot style.
4) The scale for each axis needs to be equally spaced. If four squares of the axis represent say 5
minutes on time scale, the next five squares must also represent 5 minutes.
5) The independent variable goes in the x axis. If you can’t decide which one is the independent
variable, ask!
6) The paper used must have very small squares. Do not use the engineering paper or lined paper
or you will get 0 points for your graph. Data from lab often has a lot of significant digits so you
need to use paper that allows you to plot the data correctly. There is often extra FREE graph
paper in the lab or near DH 16.
7) If you submit a graph done incorrectly by Excel or some other graphing software, your score will
be a zero. Many students plot scatter data as column graphs or static charts which require that
data to construct the x axis be equally spaced. Often data is not equally spaced and you need a
scatter plot.
