Lesson 2.

Mean of a Discrete
Random Variable
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to do

the following:

● Illustrate the mean and the variance of a discrete

random variable (M11/12SP-IIb-1).

● Calculate the mean and the variance of a discrete

random variable (M11/12SP-IIb-2).
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to do

the following:

● Interpret the mean and the variance of a discrete

random variable (M11/12SP-IIb-3).

● Solve problems involving mean and variance of

probability distributions (M11/12SP-IIb-4).
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:

● Calculate the mean of a discrete random variable.

● Interpret the mean of a discrete random variable.

● Apply the concept of the mean of a discrete random

variable in real-life situations.
Let us say that you are
playing an online game.

In each level, you can

either lose ₱100,
break-even, win ₱300,
or win ₱1 000.
Wouldn’t it be nice to
know the expected
outcome if you keep on
playing this game?
In fact, you can have a general idea on the possible outcome
through statistics. If you keep on playing the game, you can
determine the average of the outcomes through discrete
random variables.
In the previous discussion, we have learned that a discrete
random variable is a variable which has a finite number of
possible values or an infinite number of values that can be
counted. We can determine the average of these values, which is
the number that is most likely to appear when the experiment is
performed.

In this lesson, we will learn how to determine the mean of a

discrete random variable.
Essential Questions

● What is the difference between the mean of a raw data to

the mean of a probability distribution?

● How does the interpretation of the mean affect our

understanding of the probability distribution?

The data shown on the next slide is the number of laptops

sold per day during the past six months and its
corresponding probability. Compute for the expected value
of the laptop sales and interpret its value.
