9.3.2 Displacement-time graphs

• The gradient of a displacement-time graph tells us the velocity of the object.


• If the graph is a straight line graph, then the gradient is constant. The object is moving with constant
velocity.
• If the gradient is negative, then the object is moving in the opposite direction to that shown on the
y-axis.
• If the graph is curved, then the tangent to any point on the curve gives the instantaneous velocity of
the object at that instant of time.
