LESSON
ADVOCACIES IN CONSERVING AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT
BEGIN!
. . . .
What is happening to our environment today? Are you aware?
Ever since we can comprehend, we have been taught that the environment is
under a huge strain due to the pollution and corruption we, the inhabitants have
introduced to it. What have we done so far? Raising awareness of issues in our
environment is a huge first step in mitigating the worsening state of the environment.
Creating activities that develop advocacy for preserving and conserving the
environment is the focus of this module.
Have you thought of activities that may raise awareness and advocacies
among people? Are you aware of what preservation and conservation is?
Do you want to know more? Continue with this module and perform the
tasks ahead to know more!
YOUR
TARGETS
. . . .
Differentiate conservation from preservation of the environment;
Design activities using locally available resources showing advocacy
in conserving and preserving the environment; and

“The earth is made to suffer the wrongdoings of its inhabitants”, this is a line
from a prayer against disasters of a religion, and this has not been truer than it is
today. The environment is suffering, and it has been suffering for a long time already.
But what are we, the inhabitants, to do about it?
Awareness of the problem is the first step in solving or at least mitigating it.
Raising advocacy for the preservation and conservation of the environment is
important in doing so.

advocacy cause.
In the current state of the environment not only in the Philippines but also in
the world as a whole, preservation and conservation of the environment and its
resources have been the constant content of conversations. Sometimes though,
these two terms are confused with each other and used interchangeably. How
defining these terms affects the development of activities that promote advocacies for
environmental change is somewhat lost to most but in reality, is crucial for without
knowing the proper use of such terms, the proper advocacies and activities in line
with these terms may not be met, done, and received by the world.
7
So, what is preservation and what is conservation? When you want to use
nature and its resources properly, you are practicing conservation. Preservation, on
the other hand, is when you are protecting nature from being used. To put these
terms into real-life examples, say you have a pail of water. When you use the water
but also make sure that you and people around you can also use it and in extension
people who might need it in the future can use it, you are practicing conservation. But
if you do not want anybody to touch your pail of water, preservation is done.
Waste management and disposal, wildlife protection, clean air, clean water
management, and climate change, are just five of the many aspects of conservation
and preservation of the environment that can be the focus of advocacies. It can lead
to designing activities for the said environmental issues. Designing activities for these
advocacies is quite easy, for waste management disposal, reducing the introduced
waste to the environment can be a starting point. Wildlife preservation can begin by
not engaging in events and activities that involve the destruction of their habitat.
Clean air and water start with each individual’s activities and can be addressed by
retracing or reexamining our daily habits and activities. Climate change can be
addressed by all these activities combined since the drastic climate change is but
effects of the changes in these aspects of the environment.
