Reflection

Learning about the music of Medieval, Renaissance,

Baroque, and Romantic periods has enhanced my
understanding of the development of Western music.
The initial establishment of choral structure and texts
came in the form of Gregorian chants during the
Medieval era. The Reformation expanded the principles
of European music through polyphony, centralling
music on a single phrase. The works of Bach and
Handel in the Baroque age introduced dramatic
contrasts and ornamentations defining the era’s
intricacy. Emotion and individualism took precedence in
the music of the Romantic period which was spear-
headed by Beethoven and Chopin, capturing the
climatic shift in society. It indicates the relationship
between music and its changing patrons and the
creativity of that time. This also indicates that music is
ageless as every period’s elements can be incorporated
into the contemporary music. This crossing over the
different eras of music is not merely an increase of
one’s cultural mobility but also an appreciation of
deeper ties with the art.
