Grade 12 : Prelim I Exam : 2024-25

Subject: Physics Max. Marks: 70


Date: 22/11/2024 Duration: 3 hours

All questions are compulsory.

This question paper is divided into 4 Sections, A, B, C and D as follows:

Section A

Question number 1 is of fourteen marks. All parts of this question are compulsory.

Section B

Each question carries 2 marks each with two questions having internal choice.

Section C

Each question carries 3 marks each with two questions having internal choice.

Section D

Each question are long-answer type questions and carry 5 marks each.

Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper. They must NOT
start writing during this time.

Question 1 [A] Choose the correct alternative (a), (b), (c) or (d) for each of the questions given
below: (14 X 1 = 14 marks)

1. The objective in a reflecting telescope is

2. A metallic wire having length of 2 m and weight of 4 x 10-3N is found to remain at rest in a

3. Assertion : Each bulb in a frill of 20 bulbs in series when connected to supply voltage will emit more
light than each bulb in frill of 19 bulbs in series when connected to same supply voltage.

Reason : Each bulb in a frill of 20 bulbs in series will get less voltage than that in frill of 19
bulbs.

(A) both Assertion & Reason are true & the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion.
(B) both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not a correct explanation of the

[B] Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Can X-rays and Sound waves interfere?

2. The resistance of a coil for direct current is 5Ω. What will be the effect on its resistance
when connected in alternating current circuit?

3. What is the value of power factor for pure capacitive circuit connected to alternating
current source?

4. What will be the effect on the resistance of an ammeter which is formed by converting a
galvanometer to ammeter?
5. Write Coulomb’s law in vector form.

6. A conducting sphere S1 encloses a charge q. There is a larger concentric conducting sphere


S2, with no addition charge between S1 & S2. Find the ratio of electric flux through S1 & S2.

7. For a metallic conductor write the vector relationship between current density (J) & electric
field intensity (E).

Section B
(Answer all questions)
Question 2 (14marks)

1. Show graphically how electrical resistance of a piece of silicon varies when its temperature
is varied.

2. (i) Write an expression for the magnetic field at axial points inside a long cylindrical solenoid
and at one end.

(ii) Write the statement for lens’s law.

3. A coil in the shape of an equilateral triangle of side 10 cm lies in a vertical plane between
the pole pieces of permanent magnet producing a horizontal magnetic field 20 mT. The
torque acting on the coil when a current of 0.2 A is passed through it and its plane becomes
parallel to the magnetic field will be √x ×10−5 Nm. Find the value of x.

OR

Figure below shows a metallic rod MN of length l = 80cm, kept in a uniform magnetic field of
flux density B = 0·5T, on two parallel metallic rails P and Q. Calculate the emf that will be
induced between its two ends, when it is moved towards right with a constant velocity v of
36 km/hr.

4. A concave mirror produced a real, four times magnified image of an object placed at 10 cm
in front of it. Find the position of the image and the radius of curvature of the mirror.

OR

A biconvex lens made of glass (refractive index 1·5) has two spherical surfaces having radii
20 cm and 30 cm. Calculate its focal length.

5. The radii of curvature of both the surfaces of a convex lens are equal. Prove that the focal
length of the lens will be equal to its radius of curvature, if the refractive index of the
material of the lens is 1.5.
6. Calculate the dispersive power of a transparent material whose refractive indices of violet
and red colour are 1.58 & 1.56 respectively.

7. In a telescope the objective is larger and the eye piece is smaller. In a microscope the
objective is smaller and eye piece is larger. If a telescope is inverted, will it be able to work
as microscope? Give reason for your answer.

SECTION C: (27 MARKS)

Question 3:

1. An alternating emf of frequency 50Hz is applied to the circuit with a resistor of 20 Ω, an


inductor of 100mH and a capacitor of 30µF connected in series.

I. Calculate inductive reactance.


II. What is the angle by which the current lags or leads the applied e.m.f?
III. Represent the voltage and current in a vector diagram showing the phase angle.

2. PQ is a long straight conductor carrying a current of 3 A as shown in


Figure aside. An electron moves with a velocity of 2×107 ms−1 parallel to
it. Find the force acting on the electron. Also state the direction of the
force.

3. For the given system of charges in the adjoining diagram, find the work required to remove
the charge +4q from point P to infinity.

4. Draw a ray diagram of a compound microscope and derive an expression for its magnifying
power when the final image is at least distance of distinct vision

OR

With the help of a neatly drawn labelled diagram, prove the law of reflection on the basis of
Huygen’s wave theory.

5. Draw a labelled graph showing the variation in intensity of light with distance in a single slit
Fraunhofer diffraction experiment. Also mention condition of path difference for Maxima
and minima.

6. Suppose that the electric field amplitude of an electromagnetic wave is E0 = 120 N/C and
that its frequency is f = 50.0 MHz
(a) Determine B0,w, k, and λ. (b) Find expressions for E and B.

7. Using Gauss’ theorem derive an expression for the electric intensity due to a charged thin
spherical shell at

(i) External point (ii) Surface point (iii) Internal point

8. A 2µF parallel plate capacitor is filled with a dielectric slab (K = 5) between the plates is
charged to 100V and then isolated. What will be the potential difference if the dielectric be
removed? How much work would be done in removing the dielectric?

OR

In the circuit shown below in figure, E1 and E2 are batteries having emfs 4.0 V and 3.5 V
respectively and internal resistance 1 Ω and 2 Ω. respectively. Using Kirchhoff’s laws,
calculate currents: I1, I2 and I3.

9. Answer the following questions:

(i) The current flowing through a conductor is given by I = n e A Vd. Identify each term in
the equation.
(ii) Write an equation for equivalent capacitance when two capacitors of capacitance C1 &
C2 are connected in series.

(iii) Write mathematical form of Gauss’ law in electrostatics.

SECTION D: (15 MARKS)

Question 4:

1. State Biot-Savart’s law. Apply it to derive the expression for magnetic field due to circular
current carrying conductor at a point on the axis of the coil

OR
(i) Distinguish between diamagnetic, paramagnetic & ferromagnetic materials. Give two
examples of each. [2]
(ii) Derive an expression for torque on a bar magnet when kept in a uniform magnetic
field. [3]
2. an expression for refraction at a single (convex) spherical surface, i.e. a relation between u,
v, R, n1 (rarer medium) and n2 (denser medium), where the terms have their usual meaning.

3. Read the following text and answer the following questions on the basis of the same:
Electric Toaster: Small Industries Service Institute Takyelpat Industrial Estate Imphal has
designed an Electric toaster which is operated at 220 volts A.C., single phase and available in
four different rated capacity such as 600 W, 750 W, 1000 W and 1250 W. The heating
element is made of nichrome 80/20 (80% nickel, 20% chromium), since Nichrome does not
get oxidize readily at high temperature and have higher resistivity, so it produces more heat.
The element is wound separately on Mica sheets and fitted with body of toaster with the
help of ceramic terminals.

I. What is the Heating element of the toaster is made of?


ii. What is meant by 80/20 Nichrome?
iii. Which one of the following toasters will consume more electricity?
iv. What is the operating voltage of the device?
v. Which Insulating material / materials is/are used in the device?
