PLAYING WITH MIRRORS - 5

MULTIPLYING IMAGES
TASK 1:

You need: two

unframed
mirrors– the

size of 4” x 6”.

Tape two mirrors

nd
together at the
back.
You can make the mirrors stand vertically like this
on the hinges with the polished surface facing you..

Look in between the mirrors which are at an angle with each other.

images do you see inside the mirror?
Totally, how many, including the object in front?
Keep changing the angle between the mirrors and keep observing how the number of images change

What was your observation and

inference from this activity?
TASK 2:
Between the two mirrors vertically placed, you can see in figure 1, an eraser
seen 4 times totally including the object in front.

Stop changing the angles when you see 4 images totally.

At the base of both the mirrors draw lines to trace the
angle between the mirrors.
Remove the mirrors and measure the angle between the
bluelines . You will find the angle to be 900.

Repeat the activity until you get a total of 6 images. The

angle will measure 600 now.

What do you think the angle here will be? Why?

Change the object that you keep

between the mirrors to something
asymmetrical – not having symmetry.
How do the images change now?
TASK 3:
With your protractor, draw two lines each making an angle of 300, 450, 1200.
First guess the number of images you will see.
Draw beautiful images between the angles.
Then place your mirrors and check to see if your guess was correct.

TASK :4:

Place your double mirror vertically on a ruled sheet of paper.

First place the mirrors together in a horizontal position on a line draw on the
page.
Keep moving the mirrors up and down, varying the angle between the mirrors.
You will be able to see polygons galore as you move them.
The polygons will be of different shapes and sizes.

Enjoy yourself playing with the mirror images.

These images when seen

inside the mirror are called
Mirror images or they have
reflective symmetry.
What do these words imply?
