Geometry of Triangles

A triangle is a three-sided polygon with three interior angles.

An angle is the amount of turn between two straight lines that meet at a common end point (or
vertex). Angles are measured in degrees.

Types of Triangles

1. Scalene triangle-all sides unequal and all angles unequal.

2. Isosceles triangle-two sides equal in length and two base angles equal.
3. Equilateral triangle-all sides equal in length and all angles equal to 60°.
4. Right-angled triangle-one angle is equal to 90°.

The angle properties of triangles

1. The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 𝟏𝟖𝟎° (Sum of ∠s in ∆)

Supplementary angles are angles that add up to 180°.Therefore,we say the angles of a
triangle are supplementary.

Example

1. Determine, with reasons, the value of 𝑥 in the following:

1.1 1.2.1

1.2.2 ̂.
Hence, find the size of 𝐾

Answer

1.1 𝑥 + 25° + 110° = 180° 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 ∠𝑠 𝑖𝑛 ∆

𝑥 + 135° = 180°
𝑥 = 180° − 135°
𝑥 = 45°
1.2.1 𝐼̂ + 𝐽̂ + 𝐾
̂ = 180° 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 ∠𝑠 𝑖𝑛 ∆
40° + 𝑥 + 𝑥 + 20° = 180°
2𝑥 + 60° = 180°
2𝑥 = 180° − 60°
2𝑥 = 120°
2𝑥 120°
2
= 2
𝑥 = 60°

1.2.2 𝐾̂ = 𝑥 + 20°
= 60° + 20°
= 80°
Exercise

1. Determine, with reasons, the size of the variable in each of the following:

1.1 1.2

1.3 1.4

2. Find, with reasons, the value of 𝑥 and the unknown interior angles of each triangle:

2.1 2.2
2.3 2.4
