Term 3 Investigation
Question 1:
1.1 Draw two circles with centre O, and radii of 3cm and 5cm respectively (2)
1.1.1 Mark any two points P and Q on the circumference of circle to create a minor and
major arc in each of the circles. (2)
1.1.2 Draw the radii, P to O and Q to O in both circles to produce angle
O 1 and a reflex angle O 2 (2)
1.1.3 Mark point R on the circumference of each circle, on the opposite segment to
P and Q. (2)
1.1.4 Join P to R and Q to R in both circles. (2)
1.1.5 Measure the sizes of angles PRQ and O 1 in both circles (2)
1.1.6 Carefully study your answers in 1.1.5 and make a conclusion. (2)

Question 2:
2.1.1 Draw a chord AB. (A and B touching the circumference of the circle) (1)
2.1.2 Draw a chord CD, (C and D touching the circumference of the circle) (1)
2.1.4 Name the figure produced by the four points which lie on the circumference. (1)
2.1.5 Measure the sizes of the angles: AĈB, CD̂B, DB̂A and BÂC (4)
2.2 Draw another circle with centre O and a radius of 5cm. (1)
2.2.1 Draw two chords, PR and ST not crossing or touching each other. (2)
2.2.4 Measure the sizes of the angles PR̂T, RT̂S, TŜP and SP̂R (4)

Section B:
Question 1:
Fill in the missing words next to the question number:
The line drawn from the centre of the circle to the midpoint of the chord, is perpendicular
to the chord
O
•
A D B
Given: Circle with center O. D is a midpoint of the chord AB such that AD=DB
Proof :
Statement Reason
In Δ OAD and Δ OBD
OA=OB 1.1 ………………………. (1)
AD= DB given
Question 2:
Angle at the centre is twice/ double in size than the angle at circumference, subtended
by the same arc

A D C
Given: Circle with centre O and A, B and C are all points on the circumference of the circle.
Required To Prove: AÔC = 2AB̂C .
Construction: Draw/ join BO through centre O to produce D
Statement Reason
OA = OB = OC
In AOB (2.1) ............................... (1)
A = B1
Angles opposite equal sides of
Ô1 = B̂1 + Â isosceles triangle.
= 2B̂1
In COB
Exterior angle of COˆ B
C = (2.2)...... (1)
Ô 2 = B̂ 2 + Ĉ
Angles opposite equal sides.
= (2.3) ........... (1)
BUT
AÔC = Ô1 + Ô 2
= (2.4) ........ + ( 2.5) .......... (2)
= 2 (B̂1 + B̂ 2 )
= 2 ............ ( 2. 6) (1)

O 2 = ............ (3.2) (1)
at the centre is (3.2)..............
(1)
O1 + O 2 = (3.4)..... ..... + .......... (1)
BUT
O1 + Ô 2 = 360
Sum of angles around a point.
2( Â + Ĉ) = 360
Aˆ + Cˆ = 180
