INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
Computer aided design or computer aided drafting is an integration of computer
software techniques for engineering design. Activities include:-
- Use of hardware / softwares
- Numerical methods
- Drafting 2D / 3D

AutoCAD is used by Architects, mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical e.t.c

OVERVIEW
1. What is CAD?
2. What does civil engineer do in CAD?
3. What are the applications of CAD in civil engineering?
4. Why use CAD
5. About CAD
Drawing is a rough sketch which gives some message or information about a product.
Drafting is a language of engineers with exact scaling, measurements, accuracy and with
standards like ANSI, ISO, ASEE etc.
Design is a complete prototype with analysis and manufacturing.

CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN SOFTWARE

Civil engineering design software allows users to draft complex 3D designs of municipal
buildings and structures. These tools include those with functionality for railway modeling , road
and highway design, and mapping tools. These tools have the functionality to in every stage of
the design and construction process, including drafting, designing, visualizing, analyzing and
more.
These solutions can assist engineers in determining factors like cost, resourcing and
scheduling.
To qualify for inclusion in the civil engineering design category, a product must:
-Provide users with the ability to modify 3D primitives.
-Offer basic drawing tools like lines, circles and polygons.
-Enable users to visualize their structures in 3D.

Civil engineering design software examples:
1. AutoCad Civil 3D 7. SSA
2. HEC-HMS 8. WaterCAD
3. HEC-RAS 9. AutoCAD
4. Microsoft project 10. ETABS
5. StormCAD 11. STAAD Pro
6. Orion 12. SAP 2000
13 QuickcivilSeries 14.Prota

ADVANTAGES OF CIVIL ENGINEERING DESIGN SOFTWARE

With civil engineering design software, you can:
1. Increase productivity and efficiency in designing and modeling infrastructural systems.

2. Easily alter designs.

3. Improve accuracy, precision and control.
4. Enable communication and collaboration between engineers and with clients.
5. Perform accurate mapping generation and analysis.
6. Test civil engineering models through simulations.

DISADVANTAGES OF COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

1. Work can be lost due to sudden breakdown of computers
2. Results to less employment.
3. Work is prone to virus.
4. Need of regular updating of software or operating systems.
5. Work could be easily hacked.
6. High production or purchasing cost of new systems.
