Unit 5: User Centered System Design (UCSD)

5.1 Introduction to UCSD

User Centered System Design (UCSD) is an approach to designing systems that focuses on
the needs, preferences, and limitations of the end users. It emphasizes designing systems
that are intuitive, efficient, and user-friendly. The goal of UCSD is to improve user
satisfaction and system performance by involving users throughout the design process.
Key Principles of UCSD:
- Involves users early and continuously in the design process.
- Focuses on user tasks and goals.
- Prioritizes ease of use, safety, and user satisfaction.

5.2 Understanding Human Factors (HF) and Ergonomics

Human Factors (HF) and Ergonomics focus on designing systems that align with human
capabilities and limitations. HF studies how people interact with systems and aims to
reduce errors, increase efficiency, and improve safety.
**Ergonomics**: The science of designing tools, systems, and environments to fit human
needs.
Key Aspects of Human Factors and Ergonomics:
- Physical Ergonomics: Focuses on the human body's interaction with the system (e.g.,
workstation design).
- Cognitive Ergonomics: Deals with mental processes like decision-making, perception, and
memory.
- Organizational Ergonomics: Focuses on optimizing work environments and processes.

5.3 Situational Assessment: Areas of Concern

Situational assessment involves evaluating the environment, tasks, and user needs to
identify potential challenges in system design. Understanding the context in which users
operate helps to ensure that the system is suitable and effective.
Areas of Concern in Situational Assessment:
- User needs and goals.
- Environmental conditions (e.g., noise, lighting).
- Task complexity and workload.
- Physical and cognitive limitations of users.

5.4 Complex System Development

Complex systems consist of multiple interconnected components that work together to
achieve a common goal. In complex system development, it is essential to consider user
needs, human factors, and ergonomic principles to ensure the system is functional and user-
friendly.
Challenges in Complex System Development:
- Managing multiple stakeholders and user groups.
- Ensuring seamless interaction between different system components.
- Balancing technical requirements with user needs.

5.5 SE, HF, and Ergonomics Actions

Systems Engineering (SE), Human Factors (HF), and Ergonomics play a crucial role in
creating user-friendly systems.
**Systems Engineering (SE)**: Focuses on designing and managing complex systems
throughout their life cycle.
**Human Factors (HF)**: Ensures that systems are designed to match human abilities and
limitations.
**Ergonomics Actions**: Includes designing workspaces, tools, and systems that improve
comfort, safety, and efficiency.
Actions Taken in SE, HF, and Ergonomics:
- User research and analysis.
- Usability testing and feedback.
- Designing for accessibility and inclusivity.
- Implementing ergonomic solutions in workspaces and tools.
