LABORATORY WORKBOOK

Exercise Number: 01

Lab Code / Lab : U18AEP6505 / Design and Simulation

Course / Branch : BE / Aeronautical Engineering
(22BAE012)
Title of the exercise : Structural Analysis of a Stepped Composite
Bar Element
________________________________________________________________

1. INTRODUCTION
a) Objective of The Exercise
To find out the Nodal Displacement, Reaction Force solution results in
a stepped composite bar using ANSYS APDL for a given condition.
To plot the Deformed shaped of a stepped composite bar using ANSYS
APDL.

2. ACQUISITION
a) Facilities required to do the exercise:
ANSYS Mechanical APDL Product Launcher - Version 17.2

b) Problem Description:

Figure 1. Composite Stepped Bar

The input parameters are:
E1=70 GPa E2=78 GPa E3=208 GPa

A1=2000 mm2 A2=7000 mm2 A3=5000 mm2 A4=9000 mm2

E4=207 GPa

PR1=0.28 PR2=0.29 PR3=0.32 PR4=0.34

P1= 150 kN P2= 300 kN P3=700 kN

c) Procedure for doing the exercise:

Step-1: Open “ANSYS APDL PRODUCT LAUNCHER”:

Step-2: Set Preference:

Preference Structural  OK
Step-3: Define Element Type:

PreprocessorElement type  add/edit/delete  add  link

3Dfinitstn180  OK  close

Step-4: Define Material Models:

Preprocessor  Material props  Material Models  Material Model
number 1  Structural  Linear  Elastic  Isotropic

Click on Materials tab  New model. Input the given Youngs modulus and
Poisson Ratio values all in the dimensions of mm.
Repeat the step for all the 4 material models as per the question’s diagram.

Step 5: Input the Area values for the Sections:

Sections Link  Add  Type the relevant inputs.

Step 6: Create Nodes:

Modelling  Create  Nodes  In Active CS  Type the Coordinates of the

nodes with respect to the diagram of the stepped bar.

Step 7: Create Element Attributes:

Modelling  Create  Elements  Element Attributes  1  OK
Modelling  Create  Elements  Auto Numbered  Thru Nodes  Pick
the nodes  OK

Step 8: Apply Loads and Supports:

Solution  Analysis type  NewAnalysis  Static  OK

Solution  Define Loads  Apply  Structural  Displacements  On
nodes  Give the x and y displacements as zero because of fixed support on
the two ends  OK

Solution  Define Loads  Apply  Structural  Force/Moment  On

nodes  Give the Load values in Newtons (N)  OK

Step 9: Solve:
Solution  Solve  Current LS  OK

Step 10: Post-Processing :

General Postproc  List Results  Nodal Solution  DOF Solution  X

Component of displacement  OK
Note down the displacement values.
General Postproc  List Results  Reaction Solu  All items  OK
Note down the Force values.
Step 11: Obtaining Deformed Shape Result:

Click on PlotCtrls tab  Style  Size and Shape  Display of element  On

 OK

Plot tab  Elements

3. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

The structural simulation is computed on the given stepped composite bar

element with 5 nodes. The Results are provided below:

2 0.13363E-002 0
3 0.13580E-002 0
4 0.93380E-003 0
5 0.0000 -0.99409E+006
