Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 4

I. Objective:
At the end of the lesson the Grade 4 pupils should be able to:
1. determine the formula in getting the area of a triangle and trapezoid;
2. find the area of a triangle and trapezoid;
3. appreciate the importance of cooperating in solving the area of a triangle and trapezoid.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic:
Finding the area of Triangle and Trapezoid.

1. Greetings

Good morning, class.

Good morning, teacher.
How are you today?
We're fine, teacher.
Okay, everybody sits down.

2. Drill
Let's have some exercises first. I will divide the
class into two (2) groups. Every group will select
their group leader.
I have here two (2) plastic cups. Inside of this
plastic cup, is a piece of paper in which your group
name is written while in the second are folded
papers in which your group sounds and actions are
written. The leaders of each group will come
forward and pick a paper in the bowls.

Remember, if I call your group name you should

response with your group sound. Is that clear? Yes, teacher.

Very good! I have here the score board. The

score chart represents your total score for today’s
activity. I will give a plus point to those group who
will behave, cooperate and execute properly their
group sound as I call their group name.

And minus points to those students who are

noisy, don't cooperate with their group and don’t
execute well with their group sounds. And the
winner for today’s activity will get a reward after
the class ends. Is that clear class? Yes, teacher.

Okay! Let’s start with Group TRIANGLE.

How about the Group TRAPEZOID?

Let’s try to have a test now.

3. Review
What was our lesson yesterday? Who can still
remember? Yes,______?
Yesterday, __________________.

Very Good, ____!

Angel, a grade 4-pupil has an assignment to make
a cupcake -like output using the 2 figures, she can
also rotate one of the figures to make the cupcake-
like output. She tried to make one but she doesn't
know how to make it. Can you help angel in her
assignment?
How can you help angel?
Teacher we are going to arrange the figures to
form a cupcake-like output.

Yes, Very Good!

Okay! Who is willing to go on the board willing OUTCOME:
to arrange the figures to make a cupcake-like.

Thank you, Very Good!

Angel has now her assignment, the cupcake-like

output. And she can pass it for tomorrow.
Let’s clap ourselves for helping angel in her
assignment with “angel clap”. Everybody stands
up. (Executing the angel clap!)

Yes teacher!
2. Discussion
Have you tried to solve area of a triangle and
trapezoid? Some pupils answered yes, some are not yet.

Today we are going to determine first the

formula in getting or solving the area of a triangle
and trapezoid. After that, let's try to solve the given
figure with its measurement.

Here is the formula in getting the area of a triangle.

Formula: A
= 1/2 bh

h=7m

base = 10 m

To get the area of a triangle what should we do

first?
Let's identify where is the height and the base of a
triangle teacher.
Very good. After identifying where is the base of a
Let's determine the measurement of its base and
triangle what should we do next?
height teacher.

Very good, What's the measurement of its base?

The measurement of its base is 10-meter teacher.
Very good. How about its height?
The measurement of its height is 7-meter teacher.
Very good. After identifying the measurement of
its base and its height we are now ready to find the
Yes, teacher
area of a triangle using the formula. Are you
ready?

The base of a triangle is 10 m and the height is 7 The answer is 70 teacher

m. Let's find the product of 10m and 7. What's 10
multiplied by 7?
Let's divide it by 2 teacher
Very good. 10 m multiplied by 7 is equal to 70 m 2.
So, what should we do to find the final answer?
70 m2 divided by 2 is equal to 35 m2 teacher
Very good. 70 divided by 2 is equal to ___?
What's your answer?

Very good. So, the area of the triangle is 35 m2.

Now, let's process to trapezoid. The formula in
getting the area of a trapezoid is A= 1/2 (b1+b2) h.

+b2) h.

b2 =7 m
h=4m

b
1= 10 m
I have here a trapezoid with its b1, b2 and its height.

What's the measurement of b1?

Very good. The measurement of b1 is 10m.

How about the b2?

Very good. Now, we are ready to use the given Yes, teacher.
formula. Are you ready?

Formula:
A= 1/2 (b1+b2) h.

A = 1/2 (13+7) 4

Let's use the PEMDAS rule in solving the area.

PEMDAS stands for Parenthesis, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction.

First, let's solve the given value inside the

parenthesis. Second, multiply it by 4 and next,
divide it by 2.

Formula:
A= 1/2 (b1+b2) h.

A = 1/2 (13 m + 7m ) 4m
20
A = 1/2 (20 m)
The answer is 80 m teacher.
So, 13 m plus 7 m is equal to 20 m and next,
multiply it by 4 m. So, what's the answer?

A = 1/2 (20 m) 4 m
80 m Get the 1/2 of 80 m, teacher.
Very good. What's next?

A = 1/2 of 80
Very good. Get the 1/2 of 80 m. What's 1/2 of 80
1/2 of 80 m is 40 m2 teacher.
m?

Very good. The area of the trapezoid is 40 m2.

3. Application
For individual activity, bring out one (1)
sheet of paper and solve the area of each figure:

Figure 1: Use the formula

A = 1/2 bh

Figure 2: Use the formula A= 1/2

(b1+b2) h.

IV. Evaluation
Choose the correct answer.

Solve it! Choose the correct answer

35 m2
_______ 1.

9 cm

_______ 2.

45 m2
_______3.
3.3.
V. Assignment

Choose one of the two shapes (triangle and trapezoid). Cut one of the shapes and measure its
dimension then find the area.
