TEXT: 1
Long ago, when the first man was not quite finished, Heart and Beard lived
together. They had a farm where they grew beans, maize and millet, which are all
good food crops. When they gathered the harvest, they put all food in one store.
Whenever Heart got his share of food, Beard got exactly the same share.
One day, Beard was cleaning the food store, when he noticed that some food was
missing. Beard wondered why the food was missing. He thought a thief must be
stealing the food when it was dark. That night when Heart and Beard went to bed,
Beard only pretended to be asleep. Can you guess what happened? After
sometimes, Heart got out of bed and began stealing the food, which was in the
store. Beard could not help it feeling angry at what he saw. He stopped pretending
to be asleep and shouted at Heart: “You are the thief who stole the food”.
Heart picked up the food he stole and ran away. Beard followed him through the
fields, past a big baobab tree; over a small river until they reached a village.
When they reached the village (which belonged to the first man) Heart began to
feel tired. He was looking for a place where he could hide. Man was standing with
his mouth wide open. The reason his mouth was open is that he was surprised to
see Beard chasing Heart towards him.
Heart ran straight up the face of the Man and hurried inside Man‟s mouth, where
he hid himself from Beard. When man felt something pop into his mouth, he
closed it at once. Beard chased Heart but was just too late to get into man‟s
mouth. So he was left outside where he remained waiting for Heart to come out.
To date, Beard waits for Heart on Man‟s chin.
