Exploring the z score
Application What is the importance of the z- scores? Raw scores may be composed of large values, but large values cannot be accommodated at the base line of the normal curve. So they have to be transformed into scores for convenience without sacrificing meanings associated with the raw scores. Example 1: Reading Scores Given the mean, μ = 50 and the standard deviation, σ = 4 of a population of Reading scores. Find the zvalue that corresponds to a score X = 58. The Z-Score Z-score or Standard Score tells how many standard deviations a value is, away from the mean. A negative z-score tells that the value is below the mean, while a positive z-score tells that the value is above the mean. A z-score is unitless, thus, even values of different units could be compared relative to their groups. Example 1 : The scores of 500 students in the midyear examination for Mathematics has a mean (µ) of 32 and a standard deviation (σ) of 5. Find the zscore corresponding to each the following scores: a. 37 b. 22 c. 33 d. 28 Example 2 : The scores of 500 students in the midyear examination for Mathematics has a mean (µ) of 32 and a standard deviation (σ) of 5. Answer the following questions:
a. What is the probability that a randomly selected
student has a score below 30? b. How many students have scores lower than 30? c. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has a score greater than 33? d. How many students have scores between 22 and 28? Activity ___: A. Convert the following raw score to z-score or vice versa 1. X = 22 µ = 25 σ=4 2. X = 205 µ = 195 σ = 6.5 3. X = 56 µ = 40 σ = 13 4. X = 140 ഥ = 144 𝒙 s=4 5. X = 83 ഥ = 81 𝒙 s=5 Activity ___: B. In a job fair, 3,000 applicants applied for a job. Their mean age was found to be 28 with a standard deviation of 4 years.
a. Draw a normal curve distribution showing
the z-scores and the raw scores. b. How many applicants are below 20 years old? c. How many applicants are above 30 years old? d. How many have ages between 24 and 32 years?
