10-Day Organic Chemistry

Preparation Plan
Lesson Plan for WBJEE and JEE Exam, Organic Chemistry

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Prepare for organic chemistry for the WBJEE and JEE exam in 10 days with 2 hours of
study each day, a structured and focused approach is essential. We have to Win.

TIME ALLOCATION AND STUDY STRATEGY

Spend 2 hours/day as follows:

1. Flashcards (36 minutes): Visualize reaction mechanisms and key reaction


pathways.
2. MCQs (60 minutes): Focus on solving topic-specific WBJEE/JEE-level questions.
3. Quick Reviews (24 minutes): Revise concepts using concise notes or videos

OBJECTIVES

1. Conquering JEE/WBJEE exams.


2. Complete knowledge of PYQs

Visual aids such as flowcharts or mind maps are beneficial to enhance retention. Here’s
how you can structure your diagram:

Central Node: Organic Chemistry

ACTIVITY
● Focus on understanding mechanisms rather than rote memorisation.

Solve at least 50 organic chemistry questions from WBJEE past papers.

Day 1: Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry (BCOC)

Topics to Focus On:

● Classification of organic compounds.


● Hybridization of carbon (sp, sp², sp³).
● Inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation.
● Electrophiles and nucleophiles.
● Reaction intermediates: carbocations, carbanions, free radicals.

○ Basic concepts of isomerism (structural and stereoisomerism)

These concepts form the foundation of organic chemistry, helping understand reaction
mechanisms.

Day 2: General Organic Chemistry (GOC)

Topics to Focus On:

● Acidity and basicity.


● Tautomerism.
● Hydrogen bonding.
● Aromaticity (Hückel’s Rule).

Why?

This chapter builds your understanding of molecule behavior, crucial for predicting
reaction pathways.

Day 3: Hydrocarbons

Topics to Focus On:

● Alkanes: Preparation (Wurtz reaction, decarboxylation), Reactions (free radical


halogenation).
● Alkenes: Electrophilic addition, Markovnikov’s Rule, Anti-Markovnikov addition,
ozonolysis.
● Alkynes: Acidity of terminal alkynes, addition reactions.

Focus:

○ Mechanisms of addition reactions in alkenes and alkynes


○ Elimination reactions

Why?
Hydrocarbons often form the basis for other reaction mechanisms in WBJEE/JEE.

Day 4: Halogen Derivatives (Haloalkanes and Haloarenes)

Topics to Focus On:

● Classification and nomenclature.


● Preparation: Halogenation, Sandmeyer reaction.
● Also Study:
○ Nomenclature and classification
○ Reactions (nucleophilic substitution, elimination)
● Focus:
○ SN1 vs. SN2 mechanisms
○ Reactivity trends
● Reactions: Nucleophilic substitution (SN1, SN2), elimination (E1, E2).

Why?

These reactions are frequently tested due to their straightforward mechanism and
conceptual clarity.

Day 5: Alcohols, Phenols, and Ethers

Topics to Focus On:

● Alcohols: Preparation (hydration of alkenes, hydroboration-oxidation), Reactions


(dehydration, Lucas test).
● Phenols: Acidity, Kolbe’s reaction, electrophilic substitution.
● Ethers: Williamson synthesis.
● Also Study:
○ Structure and properties of alcohols, phenols, and ethers
○ Reactions and synthesis
● Focus:
○ Dehydration of alcohols to form alkenes
○ Electrophilic aromatic substitution in phenols

Why?

A balanced combination of conceptual and application-based questions is often asked

Day 6: Aldehydes and Ketones

Topics to Focus On:

● Preparation: Oxidation of alcohols, Friedel-Crafts acylation.


● Reactions: Nucleophilic addition, Cannizzaro reaction, Aldol condensation.
● Especially:
○ Nomenclature and structure
○ Reactions (nucleophilic addition)

Day 7: Carboxylic Acids and Their Derivatives

● Reactions: Decarboxylation, esterification, nucleophilic acyl substitution.
● Especially:
○ Properties and reactions of carboxylic acids
○ Derivatives (esters, amides, anhydrides)

○ Esterification reactions and hydrolysis

This chapter frequently appears in multi-concept questions linking other chapters.

Day 8: Amines

Topics to Focus On:

● Preparation: Reduction of nitro compounds, Gabriel synthesis.
● Reactions: Basicity, Hinsberg test.
● Especially:

○ Basicity and reactions
● Focus:

Amines are often tested in relation to functional group behavior and practical
applications.

Day 9: Biomolecules and Polymers

○ Proteins: Peptide bond formation.

These chapters are relatively straightforward, scoring, and connect organic

● Focus:
