CRITERION A :PLANING .
Learning Goal and Inspiration.
Learning Goal:To resonate with the daily problems faced by homeless people in Mombasa and create a
product that helps them feel remembered and give them hope of a better future
For as long as i can remember i have lived in a place called Kibarani in Mombasa this was before
moving to Miritini KIbarani was where most of my childhood was spent in fact even my mother and her
sisters were raised in Kibarani, well Kibarani is not or ruther was not a glorified state or urban settlement it
was actually the most despised area in Mombasa or in the coastal region of my country in general ,though
it was collected just next to Mombasa town one of the biggest town and most developed towns in my
nation as compared to other towns ,Mombasa is also one of the second largest counties in my country
after Nairobi ,it attracts a lot of tourists annually,it has very sophisticated estates and very pleasing to live
in in general ,but why exactly was Kibarani hated and at times not even considered as part of Mombasa tis
was simply because it was a slum area and it was the only existing slummin Mombasa to make it worse it
waces of settlement were divided into estates distinguished by the color of buildings and at extreme cases
of hate of diversity sometimes this estates were distinguished by the kind of people living there in terms
of cultural and tribal identity an instance where there is a place in Mombasa called Majengo where it is
preserved only for Arabs. So despite Kibarani being a slum it was home beyond home simply because
everybody was was welcomed diversity was fostered completely ignoring the aspects of culture, tribe
religion it was peaceful and harmonious to live there.
However the system that governs a country is always right and forever will be and any decision they
make is always for the good of that particular country no matter how unfair it seems ,why do I bring up
this envocking statement though? This is because i relate to it deeply because one day the country
government of Mombasa in its efforts to renovate the county and make it more appealing to the human
eye issued a one week eviction notice ,we literally had seven day to put our our heads together find a
place to move to before the county government would tear down our homes completely disregarding the
fact that we had build our entire lives on the grounds of Kibarani ,we simply had nowhere to go,and even
if we did we had to financial means of getting back on our feet, most of the dwellers of Kibarani had no
stable means of income including my parents my father back then was masoman and my mother a wash
woman with five kids to feed,,it was a life crisis for us all.
Unfortunately the eviction took place after much struggle between the public and government officials
after the government refused to fund us financially after claiming that we had unlawfully established
ourselves upon private or ruther government land.after all that drama most people went their separate
ways but a few of us how had no place to go lingered around the town square,we were now homeless and
the situation went on for seven good months .
I remember while being in that situation the only thing i never prayed for was a warmth, i don't really
understand whether it was the childish thinking of a child or was it the fact that the time we were
homeless was during the cold season because i was as cold as i had never been,a real craved the feeling of
a furry blanket against my skin,i would have found it really comforting at that time.Connecting with other
people in the same situation i realized they feel the exact same way.The funny thing though is during this
period we had no way of accessing a blanket since all our things were dispersed.Apart from feeling cold
there are many other problems my family and i faced being homeless, just to highlight a few major
problems there was luck of privacy especially for my teenage sister at that time,we also suffered from

1
luck of essential hygiene items like soap, toothpaste ,cleaning water and sanitary equipments ,we
sometimes went on for almost three days without food causing malnutrition especially for my little
brother and my menstruating teenage sister.
Now that i am out of the streets and have a home an actual house and my father in the position to afford
everything we could not back then ,i have this burning need to give back to the community in terms of
providing things for homeless people. While i was on the streets i never really noticed any wellwishers or
organizations giving a helping hand but when i was out of that situation i suddenly realized that there are
many organization funded by major political figures in your area claiming to be aiding these homeless
people ,and keeping an eye on them i concluded that they were only giving out basic things like ,sanitary
products to women, nothing for the men and small children at times ,but there was this famous one that
cooked food and homeless people would walk for mails to just received a handful of rice and beans it
quite famous in Mombasa its called Mombasa Cement Food Program.
Personally have been to the venue where the serve their food and have had a taste of they mean it was
quite decent for homeless people, and i believe what they are doing is extremely positive in term of
kindness and is something that other organization should strive to look up to and implement, but i wonder
after feeding someone does it not run through your wind how they would sleep at night what about the
cold winds hitting them they would probably be shivering on a full stomach, and basing on personal
experience i know how exactly this feeling hurt and destroys one's will to go on thus ,i am deeply
compelled to use this personal project platform to forge a blanket out of old towels found in our school.
Lastly, in addition to the above information i strongly believe that this project powerfully resonates
with the global context of Fairness And Development, this is simply because the aim of the project is to
create blankets from old towel collected in school ,with the soul purpose of providing warmth and
comfort to homeless people in Mombasa .This initiative not only address the immediate need for comfort
but also highlights the issues of social justice and equity, which are central to the global context of
Fairness And Development.
By directly responding to the needs of marginalized communities, the project emphasizes the importance
of understanding and addressing disparities within society .It encourages participants to reflect on the
challenges faced by homeless individuals ,fostering empathy and a sense of shared responsibility .
Product goal and success Criteria.
Product goal:A blanket made out of old towels in order to provide warmth ,while keeping in mind
homeless people on the stress of Mombasa.
The primary goal of this project is to create a sustainable blanket out of old towels in my school ,the
blanket initiative aimed at providing warmth and comfort to homeless individuals in Mombasa
,particularly those how have experienced eviction and displacement due to unstable financial statues that
does not allow them to afford a permanent settlement place resulting then to end up on the streets .By
producing and distributing these blankets we aim to address the acute need for warmth that many
homeless people face especially during the cold seasons which are between June to September .This
initiative will not only provide physical warmth but also a sense of dignity and care ,reminding
individuals that they are valued members of the community despite their unfortunate predicament.
In addition to distributing blanket that will help provide warmth for those in need ,this project will
also act as a platform from where awareness is created in terms of the value of community, service to
other ,and just kindness in general to expound more ,other community members would be prompted to
also act in their own way and help those in need many well wishers may be triggered in a positive way
and give helping hand to these people in future .

2
Success Criteria.
In order to measure the success of the blanket ,i had to create a table to judge the merit of the blanket and
in order to actualize this i did research on a variety of different blankets that people had made ,to suit
different circumstances and different people in different predicaments ,this i research i believe would help
me came up with a very clear success criteria related to creating the solution i intend to make this will not
only help me expand my knowledge on this specific field of making blankets but will help me create very
realist ,achievable and clear specification to critic my blanket ,below is a table that will be helping me
achieve this it is ranked from 1-6,one being the lowest level of merit each specification can achieve and

Criterion C :REFLECTION
How Utilization of Skills mentioned Below Helped In Achieving Learning Gaol
ATL SKILL1:Research Skills (information literacy)
I will be making a blanket for homeless people using old towels; in this process, I want to learn about
upcycling and eco-friendly practices. I want to make a functional and comfortable blanket without
contributing much to waste management but rather sustainability. Inoder to achieve my learning goal I had
to equip myself with immense information in the sector which inturn required me to delve into research in
both secondary and primary forms developing my research skills, especially information literacy, I
realized finding information from several media types would be paramount. It was from sites about
sustainable clothing. These sites includedMoodle fabric and Britex (secondary), documentaries from a
site called Docplay (secondary) About homeless people, and my fashion enthusiast schoolmate through

6
an interview( primary). In making the blanket, prior research was also needed regarding how to best
upcycle the towels to make the blanket safe and effective. Although I knew a thing or two about sewing
and crafting in a general view, I decided that specific research would advance these skills and further
develop my knowledge concerning materials and techniques involved. I considered both secondary and
primary research methods for attaining information of all kinds. In my secondary research, I drew upon
online resources: I researched websites mentioned earlier on sustainable upcycled clothing that helped to
provide valuable insight into ways creatively reworking old textiles. Some of these sites had tutorials and
tips on how to make blankets out of towels like i Britex was able to direct me to a content creator on
youtube who uploaded videos on remaking clothes from old materials the chanell is called ‘Angela's Five
Minutes craft’, which helped me to get more insight on other ways to make my blanket functional and
boosted my creativity. I also watched some documentaries related to homelessness, problems that homeless
people face, and the importance of community involvement. These films not only informed me about the
social context of my project, but also motivated me to make blankets that would really help the needy. One
of the most memorable documentaries highlighted stories of homeless people and how much warmth and
comfort mean to them. This furthered my determination to make sure the blankets I would be making
would be both emotionally and physically supportive. This would provide a better understanding, which in
turn helps me in my work on the blankets in making them functional and meaningful to the needs of the
homeless. I also reached out to my schoolmate (in the form of a one on one interview)who is an
enthusiast of fashion and sustainability to better my research. She has great skills in textiles and crafting,
which prepared me with practical advice on upcycling techniques such as Patch work
sewing,Reinforcement and patching, layering and crochet and knit and fabric selection. Through the
discussions, I learned various ways of reinforcing and repairing old towels to ensure they would be safe
and durable to use. The collaboration was hence quite valuable in the sense that I could get ideas from an
expert on sustainable fashion. In complementing my interviews with a case study, I also drew on safety
concerns related to the quality of the old towels. Most of them were with holes or wearing out, which I
needed to consider. I went through the strategies of reinforcing these weak areas by patching and sewing
technique , should the blankets be safe for usage. I recorded these in a record book where I can easily
refer to during crafting. More to this, I studied eco-friendly related care and maintenance of fabrics. Thus,
it would be important to learn how to wash and store the blankets in such a way as to assure their
durability. I did research on appropriate ways to wash different types of towels to find methods that would
help to keep their quality but at the same time not hurt the environment: not using chemical-based
detergents or any kind of strong chemicals that could ruin the fabric. Another essential aspect was to
establish just the right weight for the blankets. I found that heavier blankets could be cumbersome for
some people, so I ought to try to make a lighter yet warm one. My research showed me that several
towels put together could achieve the required warmth without making the blanket weigh any more than
it has to. In addition, while I was advancing my research in the project, I had to research some storage tips
for the finished blankets to remain intact until distribution. For example, I read in an article called Fiber 2
Fashion keeping the blankets in a cool and dry place prevents mold and mildew. At last, I looked at the
folding and rolling of the blankets, so that when the time of distribution arrives they would not be creased
up and would require less storage space. I kept a log of this research process. Key techniques, safety
measures, eco-friendly practices were noted in a way that was going to be easy to refer back to during the
process of making the blanket. This worked well, not only with keeping track of things but also reinforcing
my learning of the skills being developed. Through this process of research, I documented my findings
meticulously. This involved documenting all the main techniques involved, safety precautions to take, and

7
environmentally friendly practices in writing, in an easily accessible manner that would act as reference
during the making of the blanket. This organization method not only made things easier for me but also
really reinforced my learning of the development of the skills involved.
ATl SKILL 2:Self Management (time management)
It is very apparent that self-management greatly helped in reaching the learning goal of upcycling materials
for sustainable use in making blankets for the homeless. It finds its most prominent manifestations in my
managing of time between my busy high school schedules and the different research activities that were
necessary in my project. By developing a timetable and a to-do list, I was able to accomplish managing
tasks and commitments within my reach. I first decided to commit certain blocks of my daily schedule to
the study I was conducting. Considering the fact that most of us students have tightly packed schedules
with schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and social commitments, I knew this needed some sort of
priority. I carved out time each week to watch homelessness documentaries. This greatly contextualized
the general blanket-making initiative I sought to engage myself in. These documentaries not only informed
me about the problems faced by homeless people but also gave insight into creating something useful. By
devoting time to this aspect of my research, it has allowed me to understand the emotional and physical
needs of the people I tried to help. Aside from the documentaries that I have watched, I scheduled
interviews with my schoolmate, who is into fashion, knowing various sustainable materials and their
upcycling methods. These meetings were scheduled over lunch breaks and immediately after school, so I
could learn something without sacrificing any of my academic responsibilities. Further, these discussions
helped improve my understanding of sustainable practices and also provided important advice about
incorporating recycled materials into my blankets. As a result of managing my time quite effectively, I was
therefore in a better position to capitalize on such learning opportunities to further enhance my project.
These discussions were important in furthering my knowledge on sustainable practices and, more
importantly, offering practical advice on incorporating recycled materials into my blankets. By managing
my time effectively, I was able to capitalize on this learning and subsequently make my project more
comprehensive. A second important part of my research involved referring to websites related to
sustainable fashion. I allocated certain blocks of time in the evening, which I used to explore various
online resources, including blogs and tutorials on upcycling. The block of time allowed me to learn a good
deal about techniques and best practices for using old towels and other materials creatively. I noted down
tips, really useful for me, in order to have it easy to refer to while crafting. This allowed me to utilize my
timetable and auto to-do list to account for my different commitments and their respective deadlines. This
organizational method helped me to visualize my responsibilities and how much time I should spend on
my schoolwork versus my blanket project. In this way, I could maintain focus and motivation since the
research was divided into smaller tasks, and hence I could work step by step toward achieving my
objective. The self-management strategy also included rumination about my experiences and adjustment of
techniques whenever necessary. For instance, at the end of each research session, I took some time to
reflect on what I learned and how the experience would be utilized on the project. This reflective practice
not only reinforced my understanding but further pointed out areas in which I needed further exploration or
clarification.
How Utilization of Skills Mentioned Below Helped in Achieving My Learning Goal

ATL SKILL 1:Communications Skills

Communication was important in the project of making blankets for homeless people. Among my major
responsibilities, I had to procure raw materials, which included old towels that would form the base of the

8
blankets. In this regard, I had to contact my residential parents so that I could explain my project and the
purpose for which they were being solicited. This was important because only if they understood the
context and the significance of my project they would help me recure the main material which was the
towels which only them had the access to. I sent Emails to them
through the school email to ask for their help in securing the products. I also spoke to them personally
and listened actively during these discussions to hear their responses and ideas. The result of this two-way
communication allowed me to further discover possible sources to collect towels within the school. I also
informed them how much this project was very vital to any moment as it would ignite the will to
participate through donating the towels themselves or even connecting me with other people who may
have old towels in their houses that they don't need anymore.
Unlike the one-on-one talks, I also sent other information in writing through messages. I wrote a
summary of my project in words: what it was about and the material needed to my personal project
supervisor. This written document was efficient in the effective delivery of my thoughts and motivated
the supervisor to fully get involved in my project. I clearly communicated and, at the same time, was able
to mobilize support and resources for my project by being articulate and convincing. In the second place, I
kept the lines of communication open during the course of the project. I gave my supervisor updates
regarding how I was forging ahead and any challenges along the way. This transparency not only
cemented our relationship but also created an enabling atmosphere wherein I could consult for advice and
encouragement. In sum, effective communication with the people surrounding me within the school
community significantly helped in acquiring all the materials I needed and updating concerned parties on
my project.
ATL SKILL2:Thinking Skills (Application)
Application is one important thinking skill I needed and used along my journey of providing blankets to
homeless people. After conducting thorough research into upcycling and making blankets, what was
learned now needed to be put into practice. My previous research had placed me in a good position
concerning how to transform these old towels into usable blankets. First and foremost, I analyzed the
ways in which these towels can be sewn and reinforced as a way of making them even more durable and
comfortable. I went only for the means that suited the materials I had at my disposal, selecting especially
those that would add quality to the final product. For instance, I chose one of the simplest yet strong
stitching techniques to join the towels, the Zigzag Stitch, which would make the seams of the blanket
stand regular use. Moreover, I chose to apply some of the eco-friendly practices I had learned from my
research by washing the towels with natural detergents prior to beginning the making of the blanket.
This not only satisfied my objective of sustainability but also provided certainty that the blankets would
be safe for use by homeless people. I also developed a detailed plan for my blanket-making process,
right from collecting materials to adding the final touches. The plan helped guide me on how to apply the
research done in a systematic way and ensured that this project was organized. I felt that it was easy to
focus on effectively applying knowledge, as such a process was easily broken down into manageable
tasks. In addition, reflecting on one's progress constitutes assessment regarding what techniques work and
do not work with a view to making adjustments. Thus, this approach allowed me in this case to refine my
methods of improving the quality of the blankets. Application of my research served as an important
means toward satisfying my learning objective, allowing the blankets to be functional and meaningful.
ATL SKILL 3:Social Skills: Cooperation
Cooperation has indeed been a highly important social skill for my project of making blankets for
homeless people. I realized quite early that cooperation with others would not only make my work easier

9
to accomplish but would also offer insight into what needed to be done. For example, cooperation was
fully showcased when I was interviewing a peer with textile arts and upcycling experience in the
investigation sector. I reached out to this student, introduced them to my project, and asked if they would
have any knowledge to share with me. This fully showcases how cooperating with others can help one
equip themselves with virtual information that would be significant in future . During this, I made sure to
practice active listening and let them state their ideas and experiences without interjecting. Their
contribution was real and of great value, as the participants gave some tips on how to work with old
towels and proposed some techniques that I hadn't thought about. In the communicative collaboration, I
learned something new and made friendly contact with my peers, too. We shared various methods of
sourcing materials and exchanged ideas regarding the successful popularization of this project at our
school. This collaboration was a very useful approach and helped both of us support each other more in
our respective projects. Similarly, I tried to find ways to involve other students in my project. I organized
a small meeting where those interested in the classroom could come together to help cut, sew, and put the
blankets together. It not only made the process more enjoyable, but it created a sense of
community-working together around a common purpose, helping those in need. We could finish more
blankets in less time and work together to build camaraderie.

Potential Impact of the Blanket Initiative

Impact on Myself
Personal Growth and Empowerment
This creates a deep, personal growth opportunity in the journey of creating a blanket initiative to support
homeless people in Mombasa. The project allows me to turn my experiences of homelessness into an
instrumental constructive act. Collecting old towels, crafting blankets, and distributing them to the needy
empowers me to take control of my narrative and use my experiences to inspire change.
From there, I acquired practical experience about textile recycling and craftsmanship. Learning how to
transform second-hand materials into something really valuable develops my creativity but also makes me
more deeply attached to sustainability. Hands-on experience allows me to receive a feeling of
satisfaction-a good reward for one's efforts-as I can see with my own eyes the tangible effects: warm,
comforting blankets.
Leadership Skills
Leading the project presents me with great opportunities for developing essential leadership skills.
Coordinating efforts, motivating peers, and managing resources involve knowing how to overcome
difficulties and set priorities. Effective communication becomes crucial as I will have to share my vision
and get everyone working toward the same goal. This experience provides a chance to learn conflict
resolution and decision-making, important skills that will be useful in other pursuits later in life.
Secondly, I learn the value of working with other people. In encouraging participation from my
classmates or individuals within the community to chip in, I install teamwork and shared responsibility
for something. This not only amplifies our collective effort to address a problem but, all the same,
augments my potential to lead diverse sets toward a common goal. By making blankets together, it trains
me to appreciate various strong points and perspectives different individuals possess, which implies
successful leading essentially means empowering others.

Building Confidence
In taking up the mantle of responsibility for this project, I inevitably am building my self-confidence.
Every step of the process-from the organization of the collection of towels to the distribution of the
completed blankets-reinforces my belief in myself. Overcoming obstacles-whether logistical or
emotional-shows me that I am capable of making a difference. It is a confidence that will spread into
other areas of my life, from academics to personal relationships.

Impact on Others
Serving Immediate Relief and Comfort
The most important aim of the blanket initiative is to provide immediate relief and comfort to the
homeless people of Mombasa. In these cold seasons, many are not able to keep warm, and distributing
blankets made from the collected towels directly addresses this vital need. The mere provision of warmth
can do a great deal in improving the quality of life for those who are otherwise neglected and left to
suffer.
Each blanket is a concrete representation of care and love. To those who are invisible or forgotten, this
may remind them that they also belong to the community. This might be small, but it does create a huge
emotional impact, offering not just warmth but security and belonging. The blankets symbolize hope,
reminding recipients that there are people who care about their well-being.
Raising Awareness and Fostering Empathy
This project also acts as a platform to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness. By telling my
story and sharing with my school community, I hope to encourage others to reflect on the value of
empathy and social responsibility. Most of the people do not understand what it is to be homeless, and this
initiative gives a perfect avenue for discussion and learning.
In collecting and creating with my classmates, we are furthering an empathetic culture. Engaging with
homeless individuals through their stories places all of us on a human level; barriers and stereotypes are
broken, and true understanding is allowed to begin. This Project allows those who may not usually
address the subject of homelessness to face the issues head-on by stepping outside their comfort zones
into a real understanding of this systemic condition.
Encouraging Community Involvement
More than the warmth provided, the blanket initiative is about inspiring community involvement. By
calling others to contribute either by collecting towels or helping assemble the blanket try to bring in a
culture of compassion and service. This can encourage more and more people to show up in acts of
compassion and help knit the community together.
While working on this project together, a shared sense of purpose transcends individual differences.
Coming together for a common cause fosters social bonds and a sense of belonging. I encourage my peers
to take active responsibility in supporting those in need and believe this instills a lasting commitment to
kindness and civic engagement.
