Students in middle and high schools in Vietnam will be allowed to
use their mobile phones in class for educational purposes.
Many people support this new regulation. Meanwhile, several others argue that it will negatively affect students’ concentration in their learning at schools if they are allowed to use mobile phones. Write an essay of about 350 words to express your opinion. In this age of advanced technology, smartphone has become an indispensable thing that gives a great impact to mankind’s life. While many people believe that students should be given the permission to use their mobile phones at school, I personally argue that this phenomenon brings detrimental effects to students’ concentration. On the one hand, there are certainly significant benefits when students are allowed to use smartphones at school. It is a truth universally acknowledged that cell phone is a powerful and convenient tool for students to search information in class. For example, students do not have to physically go to libraries and browse hardcopy books for a simple research or homework, information will be within their grasp in matter of seconds with a portable phone. Furthermore, students are able to find extra documents on Internet websites that provide them with additional knowledge in various fields, besides the available lessons in traditional textbooks. Hence, not only does smart phone make it much easier for students to access to necessary study materials but it also broadens their horizons with more useful information from manifold websites. On the other hand, many people believe that these advantages pale in comparison with its serious repercussions. First, the permission of using smartphones in class results in the distraction in students. Due to the large number of pupils, it is extremely challenging for teachers to manage the usage of smartphones in all students. Some pupils take advantage of this to play games or surf the net throughout the classes, as opposed to paying attention to the lesson. As a result, students cannot have a basic grasp of the unit, that leads to low grades at school as well as posing formidable obstacles for the pursuit of higher education. Second, smart devices can act as an impediment to students’ brainstorming skills and cognitive abilities. They are less likely to utilize their critical thinking skills for a complicated question or a Math problem since all the required answers are available on networking sites. For instance, it is a conundrum for teachers that students today have a tendency to plagiarize other people works on the Internet, especially essay writings. They completely copy the given samples without devoting time to finding out about it and this trend thus undermines their creativity and thinking abilities. In conclusion, from my perspective, although smartphone is advantageous to students in searching materials with a storehouse of information, these benefits are overshadowed by its drawbacks, ranging from a distraction in class to a decline in creative abilities.
