Parts of a System Unit and Their Functions

1. Motherboard

-The main circuit board that connects all components of the computer. It houses the CPU, RAM, and
expansion slots, and provides connectors for other peripherals.

2. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

-The "brain" of the computer, responsible for executing instructions from programs and performing
calculations.

3. Random Access Memory (RAM)

-Temporary memory that stores data and instructions that the CPU needs to access quickly. It is
volatile, meaning it loses all data when the computer is turned off.

4. Power Supply Unit (PSU)

-Converts electricity from the outlet into usable power for the computer's internal components. It also
regulates the voltage to prevent damage.

5. Hard Drive / Solid State Drive (HDD/SSD)

-Permanent storage for the operating system, applications, and files. SSDs are faster than HDDs
because they have no moving parts.

6. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

-Handles rendering of images, video, and animations. Essential for gaming, video editing, and other
graphic-intensive tasks.

7. Optical Drive

-Reads and writes data from optical discs such as CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays.
8. Cooling System

-Includes fans and heatsinks that help dissipate heat generated by the CPU, GPU, and other
components to prevent overheating.

9. Expansion Cards

-Additional cards that can be added to the motherboard to enhance the computer's capabilities, such
as sound cards, network cards, or additional USB ports.

10. BIOS/UEFI Chip

-Firmware that initializes and tests the hardware components during the boot process and provides
runtime services for the operating system.

11. Ports and Connectors

-Interfaces for connecting external devices, including USB ports, audio jacks, Ethernet ports, and video
outputs like HDMI or DisplayPort.
