Date: 1/10/2025

Student Name & IDN: 101546997

Notes:

1. Practice safety at all times. Anyone not following safety rules and practices at any time will NOT
be permitted to continue with the lab and a “Zero” grade will be applied to the affected
student(s).
2. Absolutely no food or drinks are permitted in the lab room.
3. Carefully read and follow ALL lab instructions as provided.
4. Answer all questions, neatly, clearly and concisely, on supplied forms.
5. If additional space is required for any work, it must be typed and included as attachments to the
lab report. Make sure all attachments are titled and labeled as Attachment A, B, C, etc.
6. Labs must be completed during scheduled lab times and cannot be made up. If you miss a
scheduled lab, a grade of “Zero” will be assigned.
7. Upon completion of the lab, make sure that the professor reviews your work and signs off on the
lab cover page. If the lab is not signed by the professor or appointed lab supervisor, a grade of
“Zero” will be assigned.

Background Theory

Function/Signal Generator:

EMNG 1013 – Electronic Devices Page 2

A function generator is an electronic device that generates repeating A.C. voltages for use as inputs
to electronic circuits. It can generate various wave shapes such as, sine waves, triangular waves, and
square waves at specified frequencies. It has a built in digital display that is used to display the
output frequency of the generator or used as a frequency counter for an external source.

Following is an image of the GW INSTEK function generator used in the lab.

Oscilloscope:

An oscilloscope is an electronic device used to display the shape of constantly varying voltage signals as
a function of time. The observed voltage waveform can be analyzed for properties such as amplitude,
frequency, time interval, and other key properties. Oscilloscope controls include: screen, horizontal,
vertical, trigger, mode, and others.

Following is an image of the RIGOL DS1054z Digital oscilloscope used in the lab.

Objectives:

To practice the operation and use of the test equipment available in the lab with emphasis on the: 1.
Function Generator
2. Oscilloscope.

Note: Using Multisim the student will be able to associate and practice all the theoretical aspects of this
exercise, but the motor skills and physical relationships can only be mastered by performing the exercise
using real equipment in the Lab.

Equipment:

Digital Multimeter (DMM), RIGOL DS1054z Oscilloscope, Signal Generator

Procedure:

1. Turn ON the generator and select the function of generating a sine wave.
2. Set the frequency to 5 KHz.
3. Adjust the amplitude control for maximum output (fully clockwise).
4. Using your DMM read/measure the output and complete Table 1.

Table 1

Using the DMM

Generator Output Generator Output

Voltage A.C Voltage D.C

6.7v 0.11v

5. Using the Oscilloscope complete Table 2. Note: The Oscilloscope readings should be filled after
the tables and graphs on the second and third page are completed.
- Using the oscilloscope, connect channel ‘1’ across the signal generator with the
probe center (Red Lead) connecting to the Red lead of the Generator and the probe
outside (Black Lead) connected to the Black lead (ground) of the Generator. Ensure
that the oscilloscope is calibrated in both the Vertical and Horizontal directions by.
- The Horizontal (Time per Division) should be set so that at least one complete sine
wave is displayed on the screen.
- The Vertical (Volts per Division) should be set for A.C. operation and that the signal
occupies approximately 2/3 of the display. These settings will allow for the most
accurate readings to be taken.
- Note down the value of one division on the Oscilloscope screen which is given in the bottom
left corner option number 1 (for CH-1).
- Using formula, measure the output voltage of the signal.

Output voltage = value of one big division (volt/division) x total number of division (peak
to peak)

Table 2
Using the Oscilloscope

20v 10v RMS=Peak X 0.707 Avg.= Peak X 0.635

6. Comparing the readings in the above Tables, answer the following questions. A.
How does the multimeter A.C reading compare with the Oscilloscope?

B. What does this prove about your multimeter?

The oscilloscope should be set AC coupling (for A.C. operation when measuring Peak to Peak
voltages and D.C. operation when measuring D.C voltages. Complete the table and graph below
from the channel “1” trace:

7. Adjust the Generator amplitude control to Minimum (fully counterclockwise) and repeat
all of the above using the following Table and Graph.

Using DMM Using Oscilloscope

Output Output Output Output Output
Voltage Voltage Voltage Voltage Voltage rms
A.C D.C P-P Peak (calculated)

8. Turn On the attenuator on the generator and read the AC value of the output using the
Oscilloscope AC (rms): 30

9. Change the output frequency of the generator to 1KHz, and using the Oscilloscope adjust
the output to 2Volts Peak to Peak. Record the waveform on the graph below.

(Use the same unit for the comparison)

B. How many attenuation levels are available on the Generator?1

C. What is the Lowest Frequency that can be obtained from the Generator? 1Hz
