BE/BME 486/586 Spring 2025

Term Paper Preparation

General Policy
1. The term paper for this class is a team effort of 2-3 students. 486 students should not make a
team with 586 students, or vice versa. Each team will make a single presentation and submit
a single term paper, although all team members should participate in both presentation and
term paper writing.
2. 486 students will make a professional presentation of soliciting SBIR (Small Business
Innovation Research) grant in starting a new biotech venture company; extensive theoretical
background is not required, but the feasibility as a profitable business model should be
addressed. 586 students will write a grant proposal to the external funding agencies, such as
NSF or NIH.
3. Topic should be related to the contents of the course. Do not limit yourself only to the
implants; any topics relevant to biomaterial-tissue interactions can be considered. If you have
questions on the choice of topic, contact the instructor.
4. Term paper format: single-spaced, 11 point or larger, at least 1 inch margins.

486 Term Paper

You have just started a new biotech company. For the time being, your company will be typical
“SBIR” company, i.e., a firm relying primarily on federal SBIR grant. Assume yourselves
submitting a grant proposal to federal SBIR program. They typically award $300,000 for phase I
(6-24 months). Prepare a proposal applying for this phase I grant for the duration of max. 24
months. Due to this time limitation, you need to be “realistic” in setting up your specific aims. In
addition, briefly address your plan for phase II (typically 2-3 years after phase I) in this proposal.
