Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 -- 28 July 1741), nicknamed il Prete Rosso ("The Red Priest")
because of his red hair, was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, born
in Venice. Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence
during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing
instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over 40
operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.

Johannes Brahms was born in 1833 in the German city of Hamburg. His father was a
musician who played several instruments. Brahms loved music, too. By the time he was six,
he'd invented his own system for writing notes down on a page. Of course, he took
instrument lessons, learning to play cello, horn, and piano. By the time he was ten, he was
such a good pianist that he performed in public, as part of a chamber music concert. Brahms
May 07, 1833 - April 03, 1897 also loved books and read everything he could find including novels, poetry, and folk tales.

teacher. After a while, even though he was still only a boy, Ludwig became a traveling performer,
and soon, he was supporting his family. In his early twenties, Beethoven moved to Vienna, where
he spent the rest of his life. Beethoven was one of the first composers to make a living without
being employed by the church or a member of the nobility. At first, he was known as a brilliant
pianist. But when he was around 30 years old, Beethoven started going deaf. Even though he
could no longer hear well enough to play the piano, Beethoven composed some of his best music

after he was deaf! Beethoven is considered one of the greatest musical geniuses who ever lived.
He may be most famous for his nine symphonies, but he also wrote many other kinds of music:
chamber and choral music, piano music and string quartets, and an opera.
IF I were Beethoven....
1. How would I feel knowing that I will have hearing lost soon?
(try to cover your ears, communicate with sign language)
2. How would I feel standing on the stage without knowing that I did a
master piece?
Beethoven had steadily lost his hearing while composing Symphony No. 9. By the time of its premiere on May 7,
1824, he lost his hearing completely. The audience applauded thunderously at the end of the performance, but
Beethoven, unable to hear the response, continued to face the chorus and orchestra; a singer finally turned
him around so that he could see evidence of the affirmation that resounded throughout the hall.
About Beethoven....
1. "Ode to Joy" poem in the 4th movement was written by Friedrich von Schiller in
1785. The poem has a strong message to all mankind: it is about living in peace and
harmony together.
2.Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 was the first symphony to incorporate vocal soloists and
chorus
3."Ode to joy" was adopted as the European National Anthem in 1972. In 1985, it
became the official anthem of the European Union.

William Tell premiered in 1829 and was the last of Rossini's 39 operas. According to legend, William
Tell was an expert with a bow and arrow who lived in the mountains of Switzerland. At the time,
Switzerland was under the control of Austria and a nasty ruler named Gessler. Gessler thought he
was so important that the citizens should salute him even when he wasn’t there. So, he put his hat
on a pole in the center of town and commanded the citizens to bow down to it whenever they
passed it. William Tell arrived in town one day with his son and refused to salute the hat. Gessler
was very upset, but instead of killing William Tell right there he challenged him to shoot an apple off
February 29, 1792- November 13, 1868 his son’s head with one shot. If he succeeded, William Tell could remain free. William Tell did shoot
the apple off his son’s head with a single arrow. But Gessler noticed that before he tried, Tell had
taken two arrows out of his quiver and asked why. William Tell answered, “If I had missed, that
second arrow would have been headed your way.” Eventually, William Tell did kill Gessler, an act
that started a Swiss uprising that ultimately forced the Austrian invaders from Switzerland.
