Lab #1: Resistive Circuits &Voltage Division
Introduction
This lab introduces the fundamental concepts of voltage, current, and resistance, as well as
the use of various equipment and tools.
Procedure andQuestions
1. Prepare followings:
Digital multi-meter (DMM)
Wire (usually a good idea to get at least 3 colors)
Wire cutters/strippers
Breadboard
3. Set theDMM to measure resistance. Measure the actual resistance values for each of the resistors
(different values) as accurately as the DMM allows.
What are the nominal (stated, according to the resistor color code) and actual values of three
resistors? Note: Select resistor values above 1k ohm.
Answer: Qike (2) 1Oks ) 7-5ks
4. Connect the three resistors in series using the breadboard, and measure the equivalent series
resistance.
a. Your measured resistance
Answer:
18.4|ks
b. Calculate percentage difference between the expected (nominal values) and actual series
resistances.
Answer:
x (00
1%.5 0.486% C3s.f)
5. a.Calculate the equivalent nominal parallel resistance of all three resistors.
Answer:
:0IOkeC?s .t)
b. Connect the three resistors in parallel using the breadboard, and measure the equivalent parallel
resistance.
Answer:
6 Nowwe supply a DC voltage using the Digilent Analog Discovery. Turn on the voltage supply to
5.0V, and measure to verify the voltage output. Make sure the output voltage is correct.
Voltage Divider
7. Next create a voltage divider using two of the resistors.
Draw your circuit schematic. Specify the resistor values used and indicate where you measure
the voltage.
Answer:
4.18V
9 Loadthe voltage divider circuit load by adding a loaa resistor (in parallel) to the divider.
a Drawthe circuít schematic of the resultant voltage divider with the three resistors. Specify
the resistor values used and indicate where youmeasure the voltage.
Answer:
2.5k
b. Calculate the expected voltage drop across the now loaded circuit.
Answer:
4.24 4.29ka
(4.24+ 1)t (3s.f)
c. Measure the actual voltage using the DMM. Compare and comment between the expected and
actual voltages.
Answer:
Calculated t.055y
Measured t.0ev
