4.2 MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION

Multiplication is repeated addition. We use the symbol (×) when multiplying. Eg. 2 ×3 means
three groups of two, we repeat the addition of 2 thrice. i.e 2 × 3 = 2 + 2+ 2 = 6

(a)multiplying and put the correct answer

(i) 7 × 4 = ____ (ii) 3 × 9 = ____

(iii) 6 × 8 = ____ (iv) 5 × 8 = ____

(v) 9 × 5 = _____ (vi) 8 × 9 = ____

(vii) 2 × 5 = ____ (viii) 7 × 7 = ____

(ix) 4 × 3 = _____ (x) 6 × 4 = ____

31

Division is repeated subtraction, grouping or equal sharing. Eg. There are 8 counters and 2
boxes. Share them so that each box has the same amount.

\\\\\\\\
\ \ \ \
\ \ \ \

We use the symbol (÷) in division. i.e 8 ÷ 2 = 4

That is why each box has 4 counters.

(b) Divide numbers by 2, and give answers

(i) 50 ÷ 2 = (ii) 28 ÷ 2 =

(iii) 22 ÷ 2 = (iv) 42 ÷ 2 =

(v) 34 ÷ 2 = (vi) 24 ÷ 2 =

(vii) 46 ÷ 2 = (viii) 36 ÷ 2 =

(ix) 12 ÷ 2 = (x) 18 ÷ 2 =
32

NB; MULTIPLICATION IS A REVERSE OF DIVISION

e.g. 24 ÷ 2 = 12 12 × 2 = 24
36 ÷ 18 = 2 18 ×2 = 36

(d) WRITE THE CORRECT ANSWERS

(i) 16 × = 32 (ii) 48 ÷ =8

(iii) 24÷ =6 (iv) 12 × = 36

(v) 10 × = 50 (vi) 50 ÷ = 25

(vii) 38 ÷ =2 (viii) 2 ×19 =

(ix) ÷6=5 (x) ÷ 16 = 3

(xi) 76 ÷ 4 = (xii) ÷ 4 = 14

(xiii) 95 ÷ 5 = (xiv) 65 ÷ = 13

(xv) ÷ 5 = 20
34

(f) SOLVE WORD PROBLEMS USING MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION.

(i) There are seven cows with four legs each. How many legs are there altogether?

_______________________________________________________________

(ii) The teacher has six bundles of ten crayons. How many crayons does the teacher

MEASUREMENT

8.1 length
100cm = 1m
10mm = 1cm
57
58

AREA

(e) area of a square = side × side

e.g a square with sides 3cm has an area of 3cm × 3cm = 9cm2
Area of a rectangle = length × width
e.g a rectangle with length of 5cm and a width of 2cm has an area of 5cm × 2cm = 10cm2
