Paper Code : CE(PE)704A Structural Dynamics

Time Allotted : 3 Hours Full Marks :70

The Figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Candidate are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable

Group-A (Very Short Answer Type Question)

1. Answer any ten of the following : [ 1 x 10 = 10 ]

(I) If Natural undamped frequency is 20 rad/s, Damping ratio is 50%, Damped frequency is ______
(II) If the building is flexible then the fundamental natural period will be ________________(Longer/Shorter/Not affected)
(III) For which type of damped system there is an oscillatory motion?
(IV) The loads which do not change with time are called________________
(V) The fundamental natural period depends upon building ______________and _______________
(VI) ________ is the graphical representation of the relative amplitudes of the two coordinates and their phase angle
relationship.
(VII) Explain D’Alemberts principle
(VIII) What is mean by free vibration?
(IX) What is meant by frequency response curve?
(X) What are the methods to measure damping?
(XI) What are the effects of vibration?
(XII) A__________________ with a mass concentrated at it's tip can be idealized as a single degree of freedom system

Group-B (Short Answer Type Question)

Answer any three of the following [ 5 x 3 = 15 ]

2. Explain Ductility of a structural material. [5]

3. What do you understand by Response reduction factor (R)? [5]
4. Write a short note on Indian seismic codes. [5]
5. Why is base isolation system is effective to reduce earth quake force? [5]
6. A 25kg mass is resting on a spring of 4900 N/m and dashpot 147N-sec/m in parallel. If a velocity of 0.10 m/s is [5]
applied at rest position to the mass, what will be the displacement from the initial position at the end of 1st
seccond

Group-C (Long Answer Type Question)

Answer any three of the following [ 15 x 3 = 45 ]

7. Derive the expression for logarithmic decrement for damped free vibration of SDOF for [ 15 ]
two successive cycles
8. For a system having mass 10kg and spring constant 12kN/m, the amplitude decreases to 0.2 of the initial value [ 15 ]
after six consecutive cycles. Find the damping constant of the damper.
What is logarithmic decrement and the importance of critical damping?
9. An empty elevated water tank is pulled by a steel cable by applying a 30kN force. The tank is pulled horizontally [ 15 ]
by 5 cm. The cable is suddenly cut and the resulting free vibration is recorded. At the end of 5 complete cycles the
time is 2.0 sec and the amplitude is 2cm. Determine the damping ratio, natural period of undamped vibration,
effective stiffness, effective weight and damping coefficient for the given data
10. Find the natural frequency of the system shown in the figure. The mass of the beam is negligible in comparison to [ 15 ]
